Nudity, alcohol lead to weekend arrests

Abstract:
The first full weekend back to Athens yielded two dozen alcohol-related arrests.

Witnesses reported seeing a woman streaking Friday near the Arch on Broad Street.

Chris Gerrard, a visitor to Athens, reported seeing the woman jump out of the passenger cab of a large truck clothed and run with her arms flailing....

This is poor journalism. Posting that Derrick Thomas is your oline editor for The Red and Black does not need to be posted.

Are you going to tell us something personal about all the arrests made? What organziations each person belongs to?

Of course though, I didn't even read who the author of this poor journalism was, and then there, right there, I see it, "Greg Wilson." You are the same fool that constantly writes the worst articles that The Red and Black have had in a while.

There was no reason to post your fellow Red and Black associate. I am sure that many people were arrested with public intoxication and obstruction of law.

Grow up Greg. Your writing is NOT getting any better.

Mr. Wilson, I surely hope that the help of the other writer was the reason that Mr. Thomas was spotlighted.
You can do better than this Red and Black.

Doesn't The Red & Black have an obligation to tell everyone when one of their editors gets arrested? They write about all other types of students when they get arrested (from Greek organizations, perhaps?) I think if the paper tried to hide the fact that one of its editors was arrested, lots of people would be angry. And Stacie, how is it poor journalism when reporting the fact that he's an editor? Just because you don't agree with the item being in the newspaper doesn't make it poor journalism.

if the red and black wants to stay on "top" of that princeton reviews best newspapers list, they need to stop writing shit like this. it has NO flow and is just a bunch of hacked sentences pasted together to make what looks like is supposed to be a story. Aren't any of these writers in Grady???? If they are and this is what they're pushing out, i'm worried for the future of grady.

Hey dumbass, these are police blotter stories, which means they should sound like they do. Read any paper in America with a police round-up and the stories all sound the same, with very little flow and just the bare-bones facts. Also, when you're criticizing a publication for it's writing, it's probably best to capitalize the first letters of your sentences. Also I don't believe this writer is in Grady.

An editor with the Red and Black isn't immune to having his/her information posted if an arrest is made. The madness has begun, batten down the hatches. What is with these people who leave what one would presume to be a sane home environment and descend on Athens with all the fury of hell? Did they act that same way back at home? None of them seem to realize that a simple arrest for having alcohol under age, drinking in public, whatever can follow them all the days of their lives. As of that moment, unless the charges are dropped (by the way, the arrest information still stands) they have a criminal record. IF you can't behave, stay home; if you're already in Athens and can't behave, GO home. Fun is fun but drunken out of control behavior has nothing to do with fun.

Nice!

Finally! All of you that have posted saying that there was no need to include the editor's information are Absolutely Wrong!

Every chance this awful paper gets to run Greeks and athletes through the mud for similar offenses it jumps in with both feet. I am actually disappointed that such news was not on the front page. I hope every student on campus sees this and that this paper is embarrassed beyond comprehension

She is not saying that he is immune to having his name in a blotter, but this is no form to any blotter.

Why don't we find out the affiliation of all the people who have their name in a weekly blotter?

This isn't a story about the editor being arrested, this is just simply a blotter at the end of a general story.

"John Doe was arrested at 2:32 a.m. for public intoxication. He works at the bookstore. He was posted on bond for $5,000."

"James Doe was arrested 3:45 a.m. for public intoxication. He has chemistry at 4:30 pm on TR. He was posted on bond for $2,000."

"Jane Doe was arrested at 2:32 a.m. for public intoxication. She was a Alpha Delta Delta. She was posted on bond for $1,000."

Simply posting what affiliations each belongs to in a blotter is poor journalism. Writing a story about that certain incident and identifying the person's affiliation is another; however, this is not what happened.

I saw the woman who was streaking on friday and it was beyond sad. The police tackled her on Oconee St. near the N02 lot and she was screaming and flailing, obviously delusional. She had to be strapped down by the EMTs when they got there. I really hoped that there wouldn't be a mention of this by the Red and Black but I guess I'm not surprised. Great work as always.

Yeah, when you act like an idiot you shouldn't suffer any consequences. Impressionable freshmen who read the paper might realize that their actions might breed repercussions and thus act more civilized. Or the rest of us might be more informed on the dangers of drug/alcohol consumption, or any host of other horrors associated with voluntarily reading a publication that lets us in on what goes on in our own campus community.

Don't blame the messenger.

The story didn't even say she was a student. The facts are consistent with someone who has a mental problem, not necessarily someone who is a "dumbass." That's why the previous poster thought the story was opportunistic.

Even papers like the Washington Post and the New York Times clarify when their employees are arrested or in the news. Go to journalism school before you get all angry. Stop taking your frustrations out on the Red & Black. They do the best they can with what they are given.

I am fine with them posting people's positions in organizations and such, but out of a dozen people, most probably arrested for being drunk or underage, I am unsure as to why the story was followed by a blotter format and the person's personal status was posted in the BLOTTER (not the story)

Correct me if I am wrong, but the blotter is reporting via the police records, and I am almost positive that any police record is not going to just state "Oh yeah, and this person is the editor for the ABH."

My only concern, and apologies if I am COMPLTELY off base.

The reason his job was posted is to show that the RandB tries to be unbiased. Any time a group of Greeks gets arrested and their affiliation is published, the Greeks declare war on the RandB and accuse them of being biased and hate-filled.

Sometimes the RandB publishes the Greek affiliation of people arrested who weren't arrested at Greek functions, and I don't agree with that. In those cases, the frat/sorority has nothing to do with anything, and then you could make the arguement that we should post where every person arrested works or lives or whatever group they might be in.

So this point in the story is needed to show that the RandB isn't hiding that their editor got in trouble. They didn't put it on the front page, because that would be overkill, and his arrest just isn't that big a deal.

Had the head editor been arrested for theft, that would merit front page space. Same thing if the president of Chi Phi was arrested for a big offense.

I think the RandB got it right here. Journalism is about integrity and transparency. Tell the truth, keep news stories in perspective and don't scimp on the facts.

Leaving it just as, "Derrick William Thomas, 22, was charged with public intoxication and obstruction of a law enforcement officer at 4 a.m. Sunday. Thomas posted bond at $1,250," would have been fine.

I am not saying that you don't need to publish the blotter, but is the blotter the correct place to throw in that Thomas was one of your editors? Was it even correct to throw it in the middle of the description of the arrest and not in the end.
