Our Take

Abstract:
Student athletes, as performers, have an obligation to be positive role models. The best way to arm young people with defenses against promiscuous sexual activity is to provide graphic images of actual genital areas of both males and females infected with gonorrhea and syphilis. When I was about 13 years of age, a local medical doctor, assisted by a nurse, visited the local theatre at my home town Sierra Madre in California on a busy Saturday night. At the end of the normal program, they showed graphic moving pictures of these diseases and the various stages of syphilis ending in blindness and one's genitals literally destroyed or falling off the body which once produced them. Following these graphic movies, the lights came on and they answered questions. These are horrible diseases and simply not worth the few seconds of pleasure to risk inviting them into one's body. A picture is worth a thousand words. Every adolescent should be shown such pictures too, not just empty talk about this serious problem today. By the way, once into the body many of these diseases can never be truly cured. They are only placed in a dormant state. Again, a picture is worth a thousand words. Isn't it funny today how little we hear from medical doctors about these vital subjects? Why won't medical doctors visit local schools and this university and present such information as that very courageous medical doctor and nurse did about 50 years ago in California when I grew up? Again A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS.
