The U.S. F.D.A. has a long and sordid history of failure in protecting the American public from unsafe foods due to conflicts of interest from powerful interests, like the sugar industry and food industry. The late John Dobbins, Sc.D., sought to have ordinary sugar, sucrose, removed from the approved foods list a number of years ago, but politics prevailed.
Here are a few quotations about Aspartame from the recently published book "The Hidden Story of Cancer" by Brian Peskin, E.E. and Amid Habib, M.D., Pinnacle Press, Houston, 2006, 2007, 3rd printing, pp. 313-314:

"Neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock, M.D. (one of the world's leading authorities on aspartame neurotoxicity) commented:
'The new study released in the European Journal of Oncology by Morando Soffritti and co-workers should terrify mothers and all those consuming aspartame sweetened products. This was a carefully done study...'
"Both of these malignancies (lymphoma and leukemia) have increased significantly in this country since the widespread use of aspartame."
In another article, "Russell Blaylock, M.D., stated, 'This study confirmed the previous study by Dr. Trocho and co-workers (1998), which also found the formaldehyde breakdown product of aspartame to be damaging to the cellular DNA and that this damage was cumulative. The type of damage was duplicate of that associated with cancer. These two studies strongly indicate that drinking a single diet cola sweetened with aspartame every day could significantly increase one's risk of developing a lymphoma or leukemia.'"

Why is it that negative experiences with individuals are discounted as "urban legends" yet the FDA is always right? Just look at recent medications which have been pulled from shelves and are now involved in litigation by millions of people who have been harmed, all "approved" by the FDA as being safe for human consumption. A very close family friend vows and declares that their mentally challenged son suffered irreversible negative effects from drinking tea sweetened with aspartame - he eventually died but they will never seek settlement or even discussion in a court of law. All of these people who have negative effects can't be wrong - aspartame and splenda are not the end all, be all that they are advertised to be. Check out their contents and decide for yourself. I'm a former aspartame user, rarely use Splenda unless absolutely no other sweetener is available and then only in very limited amounts. Just because the FDA, just because some "scientist" somewhere tells you it is safe doesn't make that true for every individual. Right now stevia is the "new" sweetener, all natural. There are various forms of natural sugar made from cane - unless you just totally load your body, use it, enjoy the taste, unless of course your body won't tolerate sugar anyway. If you believe that the FDA is always right, ask some of the people who are now involved in lawsuits regarding detrimental effects from some of the "safe" medications formerly used by millions. Doctors, too, should pass out prescriptions with great caution. Ask Heath Ledger's doctors...

I do not know much about studies conducted on aspartame, but I do know this - when I finally brought myself to give up Diet Coke and Sugar Free Redbull (which has both aspartame AND phenylalanine) I went through a week of with drawl where I had symptoms and cravings that were so intense it was as if I tried to quit smoking after many years of being addicted. I know others who have had similar experiences. If there is one thing I know - aspartame and phenylalaine is dangerously addictive.
Note: I did not experience the same sort of with drawl symptoms from giving up products that used real sugar (Regular Coke, Sprite, ect).

Did you quit drinking regular Coke and then start drinking Diet? Because caffeine is addicting, and if I don't have coffee in the morning I have headaches and feel awful for the whole day (yeah, I'm working on quitting, caffeine isn't great). I've never heard of aspartame or anything being addictive...but seeing as caffeine is something of a drug, of course you'd have withdrawal symptoms.

Aspartame is dangerous

posted 8/25/08 @ 3:16 PM EST

Aspartame is extremely dangerous & needs to be taken out of our food supply. It is currently in over 5,000 products & growing. The research is overwhelming & it wasn't for good 'ole Donald Rumsfield & his hurting company, Searle, the FDA would never have approved this. Money talks - our health walks.
Please sign this important petition to have aspartame taken out of our food supply.
