Former Black Panther gives lecture

Abstract:
The laughing and clapping coming from the Chapel Wednesday evening probably caught the attention of a few passersby.

For those in the auditorium listening to Elaine Brown, it was something to cheer about.

"Something has happened to the spirit of black people in terms of commitment," said Brown, a former leading member of the Black Panther Party....

I'm glad that speakers such as this are allowed to speak on campus. It benefits us all to know what the extremist fringe has on their agenda so that we may counter their ideas with rational, logical arguments.

This women should be totally discredited and shunned for her outlandish and ridiculous remarks about the Duke story. It is a complete disgrace that someone like this is allowed to speak at the university and more disgraceful that her appearance merits a front page article.

Alumnus and Duke Dude are clearly white supremacists as you can tell by there remarks. Elaine Brown is a strong black queen and those kinds of peoples scare white folks that want to keep "darkie" down where they think he belong.

I am proud of the University for letting Elaine Brown speak. They are starting to make up for their atrocious treatment of the black race during segregation.

What exactly is she the Queen of? As far as i can tell, she'd be great right there with King Imus.

Jeremy, clearly you have some clarity issues.

Imus was white and a racist and his comments were racial.

Elaine Brown was nothing more than telling the truth about the Duke story and how, once again, the rich white got away with pulling one over on the poor black.

What don't you understand?

And questioning her being a strong black queen of African descent makes you racist too.

It's kinda sad that I can't tell if Ty Jones is being sarcastic or sincere since there are people out there who REALLY think that way.

I certainly hope Ty just has a higher IQ than that of a brick.

What did she have to pay for? She had the DA and AG trying to back her story and there simply wasn't enough evidence.

I am sure Ty Jones honestly believes OJ was innocent also. Ignorance may be bliss, but it can also be a curse in Mr. Jones's case.

this lady doesn't realize that she's the real problem in america today, she's just as racist as the people who she opposes. the duke comment completely discredits her, come on now, the accuser had a history of psychotic episodes and changed her damn story over and over, elaine i feel sorry for you because you just can't see the big picture, "white boys" is how she referred to the duke players, i'm sure if someone at a uga lecture referred to oj simpson as that "black boy" the damn NAACP would be on 316 before we knew it!!!

"this lady doesn't realize that she's the real problem in america today, she's just as racist as the people who she opposes."

I must first ask those of you who have taken issue with Ms. Brown's statement on the Duke players, if you went to the lecture. If you had, I don't think you would be focusing so much on this. This woman is nowhere near being a racist. (And while we're on that term, I don't think Imus is either, although his comments were inappropriate and, I think, more sexist in nature than anything). Those (like Elaine Brown) who call for the U.S. and its citizens to own up to the fact that this country has a racist past and is still confronting the consequences of that today are not racist. You do not need to "feel sorry" for Ms. Brown. Do you realize this woman's place in history? Please don't act like you have something to tell her about race relations.
Now I'm not going to act like I agree with everything that she spoke in her talk. Nor am I going to act like I know the truth about the Duke issue. But Ms. Brown was well-received by a mixed audience of students, locals, and faculty and was happy to engage in dialogue with (not talk down to) people who approached her at the reception. So before you jump off on one quote (like many have done with the Imus drama), please consider the whole story. This woman, and what she represents, are a far cry from being the crux of "what's wrong with this country".

Friends, Ty Jones is an internet troll account, most likely someone who is not black, dismisses black people, and only knows a caricature of what it is to be black.

U know what Charles R, any time you want to meet me for a coffee, watermelon, fried chicken, or a beer downtown and talk, I'm up for that.

If you can man up, then shut up.

Don't paint me with no brush man. I am what I am and that's a proud black hated on like Jesus man.

Ty, I'll meet you across the street from the corner of Herty Drive and Broad St, midnight Friday. That's the Bel-Jean place.

As for your caricature of black people, perhaps if you knew personally some black men and women, you'd have a better idea of how to portray yourself as one when doing the joke account gag. As it stands, your skill lacks the kungfu to pull it off. At least The Bobster is consistent, all of them in on the gag. Those of us geeks who've been on the internet can spot flimflammery, because we invented it. The internet, that is.

It's because of people like this that racism still exists. They come up with idiotic "activism" programs that actually cause even more of a gap between races. Example? Affirmative Action. Basically, racism, but the other way around. So to the black community: is that really something to be proud of?

Someone said they couldn't tell if Ty was for real or not.

I can't tell if this guy is for real or if he is just a "white" version of Ty Jones.

While I understand this woman's beliefs and radicalism given the era she witnessed, the Duke comment hurts her in terms of credibility. The facts are there and in fact the main issue should be the fact a white man used this ALLEGED crime to ultimately use the black community in order to get re-elected - not that the black girl is seen as crazy because she was obviously crazy enough to lie about being raped. And this is America - we are SUPPOSED to be seen innocent until proven guilty. I do realize when someone claims or says something to the police or media a lot of people jump the gun, including the media. Black sports writer Jemele Smith for ESPN.com wrote an apology saying she jumped the gun because it did look bad, rich white guys abuse poor black girl. However, in this case the rich white guys were innocent and now when a poor girl regardless of race claims she was raped we will all have to scrutinize her more because of this bimbo in Durham. Back to the original point, this former Black Panther is missing the biggest issue out of the whole Duke case, and it comes from a white man in power using the black community for personal gain. She loses credibility by stating complete inaccuracies.

i will act like i have something to tell her about race because she obviously just doesn't get it. and someone brought up a good point, aren't we innocent until proven guilty? or does that not apply to rich "white boys"

Charles R...midnight don't cut it.

Starbucks for coffee, you're buying.

Sat, 5 pm.

We'll talk and you can see how hurtful your words are and how dark your hate and anger is.

You're just a post or two away from being a Cho.

You can't meet on a Friday night at midnight downtown? What, are you scared? What was all this about "manning up?"

As for my dark anger and hatred, I love little baby ducks, old pickup trucks, slow moving trains, and rain.

Ty, don't you have some studying to do or something?

As for my "clarity issues," I have fixed them. You are clearly a jerk.
