This charge might turn out to be much ado about nothing; however do these players not understand that wearing the uniform of the University of Georgia Bulldogs carries with it certain responsibilities? Like true celebrities, they are subject to public scrutiny, like it or not. They represent the University at all times, like it or not. IF they cannot behave, like Mr Lemon, they should not be allowed to put on the uniform and play the game, at least until these charges are resolved. After resolution, determine their status according to HOW it is resolved. The first thing is to stay away from places where people are intoxicated; anything can happen. Alcohol is seemingly quite a big problem @ UGA and for the team; maybe recruiters should attempt to learn if the prospect has an alcohol problem before offering a scholarship. Remember Haverkamp? Remember Ian Smith? Scholarships on the football team are at a premium and should be so valued by those who receive them. Hundreds of other deserving and behaving young men would do almost anything to get one so why waste them on those who have no personal interest in behaving?

just wondering

so... how do you suppose the scouts could find out if the prospect has 'an alcohol problem?' Ask them? Ask their friends? Ask for their probation officer's home phone number?

That is kind of a ridiculous statement. Although a large number of college students- football players and otherwise- arrive at college with alcohol issues- and certainly most have not made it that far without 'experimenting' with drinking, the university reps are kind of bound by GA state law- where the drinking age is 21 and college students usually enroll around 18- and have to PRESUME that high school students are not binge drinking idiots. That is kind of their parents' jobs, if you ask me.

The statement about trying to determine if an athlete has an alcohol problem is nowhere ridiculous. I would venture an assessment that an alcohol problem would surface way before college if there is one. I'm not talking an occasional drink, I'm talking about things such as happened with players who have gotten so drunk they passed out in public places. Those kinds of things probably didn't start when they reached UGA. A stricter policy on alcohol use is in order because of those who abuse the rules. ONE incident should be enough, a second one should gain them a ticket home and allow someone else to live the dream. Tolerating constant abuse of rules, arrests, and lack of respect for authority should NOT be a part of being allowed to participate in UGA athletics. We all know of certain schools which over time have acquired a reputation of having thugs on their teams because nothing was done to discipline those people when things first happened, generally because a good athlete was involved. There's more to college sports than being a "good athlete". Those who get into that sort of trouble in college and then are rewarded with professional jobs cause much harm and loss - just ask the Atlanta Falcons.

this girl was obviously looking for attention. I feel sorry for the two men that got put in jail for such a lame and pointless reason.
just another desperate girl in a sad attempt to get people to talk to her and show her sympathy.
there are much easier ways to get attention that don't involve sending two innocent men to jail on $1500 bond each.

I hear pretending to pass out is one of them.
Go figure.

What? I'm not a feminist by any means, but it seems rather misogynistic of you to assume that the girl is merely looking for attention ... and not place any blame on the men who touched her stomach without her consent. I'm curious if they'd touched her breasts and made comments would you be still be defending the men involved ...

If you knew the girl on a personal level, Im sure you'd understand.
she's got quite a history of crazy acts and lies in attempts to get attention.

this is nothing new.

CoastalDawg: You seem to have all the answers. Why don't you write CMR and ask if you can work for him, as a moral guide for these young men. I mean, clearly you have never done anything wrong in your life so you would be an expert. I swear, did you even go to UGA? You are so incredibly out of touch with reality it amazes me. Do yourself and everyone else that has to read your crap on here daily a favor: take a geritol and chill out.

There's a difference between doing something wrong that's a matter of momentary stupidity and doing something wrong that is malicious. Intimidating or humiliating a pregnant woman is malicious.

If you are pregnant and two men you don't know start touching your belly and making lewd comments about you, you should report it to the police. I've been pregnant, and if this happened to me I would have reported it. Touching a woman's belly affectionately is one thing--inappropriate but understandable. Touching it and making lewd or hostile comments is something else.

Ask yourself how you would feel if two strange men walked up to your mom and started rubbing her belly and making sexual comments.

where in the story does it say that they were making sexual comments? this whole situation was exaggerated and blown out of proportion. she wanted attention. enough said.

No, sorry, that's not enough said.

The ABH story stated that the comments were lewd. If you look that up you'll see that it means sexual.

The truth is neither you nor I know what happened. But the fact that they were arrested implies that they were not just rubbing her tummy wondering when the little fella would be born. The very idea that they were doing that seems pretty silly, doesn't it? And that on top of that improbable scene she then reported it to the police and they saw fit to arrest these guys?

They may be found innocent of battery, but you really are making a knee-jerk, misogynistic jump to conclude that she "just wanted attention."

All this talk about the pregnant girl is dumb b/c we don't know how it really happened. First of all, I don't think it was probably as big of a deal as everyone is making out of it. We also don't know when the "lewd comments" were stated. Did the guys walk up, make a comment about her being pregnant and touch her belly then the girl goes nutty and catches a whole lot of attitude for no reason. Then and maybe then the guys start making comments after she made an ass of herself. Not saying that's how it happened but my point is we don't know, let it die for now.

Lemon is an idiot and should be kicked off teh team which he was. Way to go, throwing your future away!

The drinking issues, please! You can't expect for guys to never be around drinking or even have a drink every once in a while. This is college after all and unfortunately its a learning experience and drinking and making stupid mistakes are a part of it. I definitely don't feel like its that big of an issue. Maybe they should be a little more careful but its not the worst thing they can do.

Let these kids be kids but don't condemn them for making a couple of mistakes. God knows, I've made my share while attending UGA. Let it die.
