Abstract:
Israel ignoring lethal enemies a 'foolish' ideaThe one idea Zaid Jilani holds in his mind in his Monday column "Palestinians will never lose their spirit" is this: the state of Israel is morally equivalent to the apartheid government of South Africa. Lest he lose the ability to function, he refuses to let a second, opposed idea trouble him: Palestinian society has become so radicalized and full of Jew-hatred that Israel has no legitimate negotiating partner....

So, I think you would agree with me in that both sides are total dicks.

I can't help but agree with Richard. Both sides are definitely dicks. I still think there is a lack of understanding of this conflict amongst the majority of the American populace.

How would you feel if the Cherokee tribe wandered off their reservations, were given a bunch of guns by Iran, and retook the state of Oklahoma by essentially killing everyone who resides there. It was their land to begin with, after all. After this act of agression, and with the support of...oh, let's say North Korea and Russia...the tribe begins to expand its land into the states of Texas and Missouri. Americans are furious, and want to do something about it, but any attempts to take back our country is viewed as an act of war by people who consider our religion to be apocryphal. Our military is powerless against the rogue state, who are backed by some of the most powerful military complexes in the world, so former citizens of Oklahoma begin to take the law into their own hands. These people, only looking to retake what was theirs, are labeled "terrorists" and threatened with full military force by the allies of the tribe.

This is obviously allegorical...but imagine what you'd do if something like this happened to you. I'd probably be pretty pissed. So before you blab on about how it's anti-semitic not to support Israel, think about how you would respond if something like that happened to you.

Peace Monger, I would make one change to your analogy: Israelis have not been in any prolonged possession of the land since Kings David and Solomon (1000 B.C.E. more or less). There was a spell about of some decades in the 1st century B.C.E. when the Jews owned the land, but otherwise it's always been other empires' land.

So, the native Americans who "owned" (inasmuch as the word can be used to describe the native Americans' practices) the land before the colonists have a far better claim to it than do the Israelis in the Palestine.
