Let me get this straight... an arrest warrant was taken out last week for a football player, but he wasn't arrested until yesterday?

What... the police couldn't find him or something? Man... that's sweet. I needed a good laugh today!

The UGA detectives swear out warrants all the time, but all of them go to the Sheriff's Office for them to serve. UGA has nothing to do with serving warrants. Also for a misdameanor warrant the Sheriff's Office often just calls the person and tells them to go turn themselves in which is what happend.
Taking state property and securing inside your house for a week is a crime, there are markings on the boots that say to call parking services and that it is a crime to remove the boot or to take it. He knew the law, he broke it, he didn't pay his fines, he stole state property and concealed it off campus. He should be expected to pay his fines like the rest of us who choose to break the rules.
And yeah they knew he was in Fl playing football but would thousands of dollars for an officer to go down arrest him and drive back up be warranted for a misdemeanor arrest warrant no, thats silly.

So the police should ignore crimes and not try and recover property purchases with your tax dollars. Your obviously a moron, how hard is to understand that when you steal something you just might do to jail, FUCKING IDIOT!

When football players cannot have a beer downtown or drive their mopeds without getting parking tickets, the TERRORISTS have already won.

I would want to secure my moped at my residence as well. It was not like he was taking the boot! Where is the problem?

Football plays should not be arrested for unpaid parking tickets on mopeds. Georgia beat Florida . . . who cares about parking tickets, I don't pay them either.

Hey moron, he was arrested for stealing a 500 dollar piece of state property and concealing it at his house. You only get a boot if you have over 200 dollars in unpaid tickets. Since you also dont pay you too will eventually have a boot and if you steal it you too will go to jail, asshat.

A dangerous sexual predator is still at large in our area.
The recent armed robberies downtown remain unsolved.
Violent crimes are on the rise in ACC.
While I understand that the Police Department and the county appreciate the revenue generated by collecting parking fines, wouldn't it be in the best interest of the community for the Police to dedicate all available resources to eliminating legitimate threats?

Google Son of Sam and read how Berkowitz was caught (or read about the broken windows theory or the tactics used to lower New York City crime that got Guilini so much credit.) Ignoring small crimes is a very poor idea.

Hey idiot, the UGA police took out the warrant against him not the county police. None of the sex crimes have occurred on campus and UGA police arent involved in the investigation. By your logic the police should abandon all the other crime in Athens to look for one guy. But thanks for commenting on a profession you know nothing about.
The Theft occurred on campus and was investigated by UGA police, has nothing to do with Clarke County. Idiot.

Oh yes, because every law enforcement officer in Athens (GBI, UGA PD, ACC PD, Clarke County Sherriff's Department, GA State Patrol) are all working on enforcing parking tickets. you're a moron.

I "stole" a boot myself. I have a friend who left one destroyed after taking it off his vehicle with power tools. In both cases we were allowed to pay for the boots and the fines and it was dropped. We weren't arrested and it didn't make the newspaper. This is a no-story. If this guy wasn't an athlete, nobody would give a shit.

First, a football player is more than just "another university student". He represents the University hopefully in all that is good - his name, his face, his actions were flashed around the world on Saturday during the game with Florida. He should set an example, not BECOME an example. Pay the tickets, get the boot off, be a good citizen. On the other hand however, another poster referred to some really serious crimes which are still unsolved. While that officer was spending time and effort tracking down a "boot" offender he could have used the time to look for the predator or some other criminal. If the boot was still on the scooter, how can he be charged with stealing it? But common sense in many places and in many people is missing now - most of us can tell the policeman exactly what he should have done. Get Coach Richt or the positions coach for Curran, take that coach and go to the player - locate the boot or get $350, end of story. Instead he now has a criminal record. No excuse because he's a football player but that should be the routine for anyone who has done such a terrible crime. It is my humble opinion that parking in any area which has been paid for with taxpayers' money should never require money to be paid for parking there anyway. It's public if it's owned by taxpayers.
