Abstract:
Weekend study sites limited at UniversityUnlike the majority of the Athens collegiate populace, I spent Friday night studying at Jittery Joe's. Before getting there, however, I spent a good 30 minutes wandering around campus trying to find a quiet nook to study and, low and behold, all of the campus resources available to non-freshmen were closed! Surprise, surprise....

Weekend study sites limited at University

That's right Ms Cierny, the University administration talks a good game about academic rigor, etc etc, but their actions are the best evidence of their empty words.

Football fans too rowdy? Close the library.

Budget cuts? Close the Library, Close the Student LEARNING Center.

Most importantly, our administrators for all their generous salaries are not good advocates for the health and welfare of this campus (for faculty, staff and students). Instead of cowering everytime some legislator has some uninformed opinion about what makes a university a sound academic institution, the administrators should be educating the legislators and the public. Oh, they say they do ... where? at country clubs? in the sky box at football games?

And yet, students must voice their opinions too.

As long as the administrators bow down to US News and World Report (and scorn the Princeton Party School ratings), as long as big money sports programs take precedence over libraries, well ... you see the results.

I want to echo Alan's comments in regard to bumper sticker removal. I returned to my car this afternoon to find that my Obama magnet had been removed and replaced with a McCain-Palin sticker. Removing property of someone's car is immature, rude and disrespectful. Extreme liberals and extreme conservatives, that can not respect the view point of others, are one of the biggest problems with American politics. Yes, this is an important election. Yes, this is an emotional election. But nothing gives a person the right to impose their beliefs on to another person. This act of vandalism make a mockery of what American stands for: Democracy and the ability CHOOSE.
