LODGING COMPLAINTS: Critters invade dorm life

Abstract:
Vinegar, roach traps and sprays - for Raine Miller and his Reed Hall roommates, it seemed they had tried everything to get rid of the trails of ants that flow through their first floor suite.

Miller and his roommates once tried dousing vinegar along the perimeter of their common room to "direct them out the door," but the ants came marching, one by one, back into the suite....

SO, because of the Red and Black's knack for accuracy and somewhat disregard for housing policy in the manners that they have been reporting for the last 2-4 months, I feel compelled to enlighten some.

As far as pests in the dorms go, that is really out of housing's hands. The University has a set policy that UGA housing CANNOT spray pesticides in a resident's room. If a pest control work order is filed, it is sent to a 3rd party Pest Control Company; and if they don't do anything about the problem it is not the University's doing, but the 3rd Party's.

As far as mold and other problems go, Housing does what it can to treat the visible problem, if a mold problem is behind the walls, there is no way to know until a problem occurs.

I hate how Housing has been demonized by the R&B. Please just drop the issue. You are beating a dead horse and wasting tons of perfectly good space to write needed articles. Please write articles that matter instead of this continuous line of BS.

Thanks

Sorry mate, but UGA Housing has been ranked by princeton review to be one of the worst departments of its kind in the country. Pest control HAS sprayed within rooms at reed (to no avail), and if your third party isn't working, HIRE ANOTHER ONE. Stop BSING.

Well I figure you might like to know the set policy by the university about pest control. Maybe, if the people in the dorms would clean up after themselves they wouldn't have such an infestation. Bugs don't just show up for no reason. While UGA housing may be rated by the Princeton Review to be low, I can assure you that the work orders that are actually received by the Maintenance offices are actually taken care of rather expediently.

Once again, housing has been demonized by the R&B and the writers have done all of the 'investigation' into the 'problems' but they haven't even looked into the University Policy. But clearly Mr. Lets-Quote-The-Princeton-Review, you have. Yet you accuse me of BSing, let me apologize to you and all reading for explaining the ACTUAL workings of UGA Housing and Dorm Maintenance.

Oh, and for future reference, the R&B doesn't even attempt to contact the people that they say cannot be reached. I know for a fact that Chris LeMasters was never contacted by the R&B and they reported that he refused to talk to them. Chris is a personable guy that is ALWAYS accessible in his office or via email or phone. And this isn't the first time the R&B has accused someone of refusing to talk with them. Does anyone remember the head of the math department that got a DUI last year? Guess what, he was in his office all day the next day when the R&B couldn't reach him...some reporting there.

The fact of the matter is that the R&B is as accurate as the Globe or the National Inquirer!

It's rather amusing to read about how much some of these students can whine. I guess there were no ants, roaches or spiders in the ivory towers where they "grew up".
