Budget cuts may stall child care

Abstract:
Budget cuts continue to hit all areas of campus - including child care - but the University may be able to propose on campus child care plans by November.

The UGA Child Care Needs Assessment Study conducted earlier this year was presented to faculty and staff, but the administration had to postpone child care ideas to examine the financial side....

Here is a suggestion to those who would have the state provide child care on campus at the expense or partial expense of taxpayers: If you do not have time to work and raise children, then quit your job and raise the children.
If you cannot afford the children without working, then don't have children. It is very simple. Do not have children you cannot afford or will not tend to. Do not expect others to do your job for you. As a citizen and taxpayer, I vote against any new program for child care on campus, which will force my family to pay more taxes on top of the already outrageous taxes it pays now for bloated government. This week our family must come up with about $12,000 in property tax for AThens Clarke County while many "citizens" here pay nothing at all.
By the way there is a new day care center about to open up on Oglethorpe Ave. at the corner of Brooklyn.

You have no right to pass judgement on the plight of a single parent, especially that of a single mother, until you have walked in their shoes. Shame on you!! But for the grace of God...

Are you serious?? Do you even have kids? If you so have kids, did you or the mother quit your job because of it?? Kids are expensive and it is nearly impossible these days to sit at home and do nothing but raise them. I pay taxes just like everyone else but I feel like a daycare on campus would make life easier for so many people. As a citizen, taxpayer, and mother I do not expect anyone to do the job of raising my child but while paying 30 grand in taxes on my family farm every year I can't afford to sit at home and twiddle my thumbs. I find your ignorance is appalling. It seems to me that you are trying to infer that everyone that wants daycare on campus is just trying to live off of the system and be a user. However, I am here to say that I approve the plan for a daycare on campus for both children of students and children of professors and other University employees. Also, since you want to complain and tell people not to have children that they can't afford; it seems to me that I should tell you that if you're going to complain about high property taxes then you shouldn't have bought an expensive property that it seems you can't afford. Everyone struggles with money and other things in life and it is not your position to tell people that they should or shouldn't have children and work. Would you prefer the alternative of people sitting at home with these kids and possibly living on welfare or other government agencies (that you and I would also pay for) because they didn't get a job? Or maybe never get a degree so that they can afford a child that may have been unplanned?? You are completely insensitive to the plight of others when life can't always be happily ever after, which it seems you have obtained while sitting on your high and mighty throne. I could go on and on but I have both work and a child to tend to so I'm out of time. Next time, keep your ignorant comments to yourself.

Wow!! Then get rid of the mobile home park that you own, maybe you are in over your head, sounds as if you are just a pissed off man because he feels he has been slighted, get over it. This has become very common in large companies and universities across the country. It is not all about the cost but also about the ease of having your child close , studies have shown that benefits such as this add to productivity of workers. You can complain all you want but you are not the only taxpayer in GA

Maybe if you spent more time working and less time bitching in online forums you would already have your tax money ready to go.

Having children is a choice and if making that choice means that you'll end up not being able to work as often or advance your career as much as you would be able to if you had chosen to not have children, then that's just too bad. It is your responsibility to plan your life accordingly. Society doesn't owe you anything.

I'm pretty sure that none of us are saying that society owes us a free babysitter. I'd be willing to pay simply for the proximity and ease of mind knowing that my child is close and safe.

No I agree totally no one owes anyone anything, we have more than enough govt programs and I by no means do I think that the childcare should be free, if they could just provide the housing and staff, it is a business that could pay for itself and possibly make a profit. But all enrolled in the daycare should pay no matter what. Sorry if I sounded as if I wanted it for free

Winfield J Abby is an ignorant SOB who doesn't even deserve the attention of people replying to his comments. Every time i see his name i just pass over it because i know it comes from a piece of trash, ignorant being that doesn't even deserve to pass on his opinions and judgement and should probably just die. So please, just ignore him. I used to get just as mad at his comments and now i understand that he is just crazy, uneducated and a sad sad human being.

I agree with all of the above except the fact that he's not educated. He holds a PhD in physics from Berkeley from like 1895. Google his name, he has nothing better to do than make people mad on the internet. He used to be a professor here.
