Students interested in scientific
research, starting a business or
policy making for the federal gov-
ernment will have a chance to hear
from someone who's done it all.
Mary L. Good, a noted chemist
and former undersecretary for the
U.S. Department of Commerce, will
present this quarter's Charter
Lecture today at 4 p.m. in the
University Chapel.
Her lecture, titled "Higher
Education as part of the Global
Enterprise," will focus on relation-
ships between technology education
and success in the business world.
Good has received acclaim for
rising to positions of leadership in
the academic and business world.
She has worked as a chemistry
professor at Louisiana State
University, an executive for a
national chemical manufacturer
and president of the American
Chemical Society.
Before being appointed to the
Commerce Department by
President Clinton, Good was the
chairman of the National Science
Board under Presidents Carter,
Reagan and Bush.
Good is also the only woman to
receive the American Chemical
Society's Priestly Medal, the orga-
nization's highest award for service
to the field.
"Mary Good is one of the most
highly distinguished scientists in
the country," said Carol Winthrop,
assistant vice president for student
affairs. "She understands how
research and education translate
into important changes for technol-
ogy and industry."
Lisa Kuuttila, the University's
director of technology licensing,
said Good's lecture will be of inter-
est to a broad variety of students.
"Her expertise will be of great
value to students who are interest-
ed in how government and business
work, how companies are formed
and how technology is utilized in
the marketplace," Kuuttila said.
