A former University football player who now plays for the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants was arrested downtown Sunday and charged with pedestrian under the influence.

Danny Ware, 23, who played running back for the Bulldogs from 2004 to 2006, and friend, Jennifer Henderson, 24, of Dallas, were standing in the left lane of traffic on East Clayton Street at 2:24 a.m. when they were spotted by an Athens-Clarke County police officer.

According the police report:

Ware was standing next to Henderson in the road as though they were having a conversation. When the officer pulled up next to the two, they did not move or acknowledge the patrol car in any way.

The officer exited the patrol car and asked Ware and Henderson for their identification.

Henderson claimed to be flagging a cab, but the officer noted the couple had their backs to the flow of traffic.

The officer smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from both people. Ware took a portable breath alcohol test and blew .152, nearly twice the legal limit. Henderson refused to take a breath alcohol test.

Both were arrested and transported to the Athens-Clarke County Jail. He was released four hours later after posting a $500 bond.

Ware joined the New York Giants a few months before the team played the Super Bowl and is in his second season as a running back for the Giants.

Ware declined to comment Monday when contacted by The Red & Black.
