Politicans no more patriotic than citizens
(This letter is in response to letters from Thursday's mailbox.)
First of all, how are politicians any more patriotic than you or I?
Considering the war, the threat of future wars, our international standing and the economic situation, it's safe to say the people running this country have done a horrible job.
What's more likely is that these college-educated people aren't bright enough to figure it out (or at least surround themselves with people who are), or they simply don't care what happens outside of their superiority bubble.
In Greg Boike's Thursday letter ("Politicians serve America as patriots"), he confuses the way things should be with the way they really are.
The really frustrating thing is, voting doesn't seem like it's going to make any difference.
Can anyone name one good - no, borderline acceptable - reason that we still use the electoral college?
Doesn't this buffer seem suspisciously unnecessary?
