Fried chicken benefits charity

A fried chicken meal could help fund research for a deadly disease.

Raising Cane's was the host of a fundraiser that raised more than $100 for the 2007 MS Walk, sponsored by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society - Georgia Chapter.

One dollar was donated per combo meal Tuesday on the condition that the customer said, "I'm supporting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society."

And it was a student committee that created the fried chicken and MS event.

Raising Cane's sponsored Mighty Myelin, a team for the 2007 MS Walk-Athens on March 24, and it was thought they would be ideal for fundraising, said Abby Blaylock, a junior from Marietta and community walk coordinator.

As part of Creative Consultants, a student public relations firm for the University chapter of Public Relations Student Society of America, the students have been working with MS Walk-Athens since the beginning of March.

So far, they've raised more than $28,000 and will continue to accept donations until April 24.

"It's hectic and a lot more planning and detail orientation than I expected," said Ginny Sanderlin, a junior from Savannah and account executive. "But every goal we've set (so far) was completely surpassed."
