Unlike Smashing Pumpkins, Modern Skirts and many other bands' names, Collective Efforts' title can and should be taken completely on a literal level.

The Atlanta-based hip-hop group began in 2002 after members of the disbanded Live on Arrival still wanted to make music, and the eclectic group is performing at the Georgia Theatre Saturday night.

"We started hanging out more, collaborating, started having songs and started thinking, 'Wow, this could actually be a group,'" said J-Mil, one of the band's MCs.

Along with J-Mil, Ben Hameen and Bambu de Asiatic also serve as MCs and DJ Creashun is on the turntable.

"The name came about because everyone was bringing something different to the table," J-Mil said. "It was less about the group and more about whoever was down to make some music and feel the vibe."

Collective Efforts recorded three albums to critical acclaim, featuring an optimistic view of hip-hop music and the messages conveyed through performances and songs.

"I don't want to fall into the negative aspects of life, so we try to keep it on the more positive side," J-Mil said. "This is an opportunity to help someone through something, just make them feel good, and that's what we're all about."

J-Mil's mom began encouraging him to take music lessons at a young age, which he shrugged off, but found interest in a different culture of artists including Run-DMC, OutKast and the Beastie Boys.

Recently, the group decided to add a backing band to the mix with Matt Weiss, Jay Murphy, Stanley Walker, Alfredo Lapuz and Richard Jones.

The guys were connected through mutual friends and various familiar links including performing in Atlanta at the same time. The collaboration idea came when Collective Efforts went to Weiss' video company to direct a music video for a song off its latest album, "Medicine."
