Spaniard invades American ears

America may have been onto something with art rockers Animal Collective and its innovative and often misunderstood amalgamations of chant, cheer and changing tone. The quartet reigned supreme in 2007 with the electronic-blasted "Strawberry Jam" and Panda Bear's outstanding postmodern side project "Person Pitch." In 2008, however, it looks like we're about to get lapped by the Latins. Barcelona's Pablo Díaz-Reixa, performing under the name El Guincho, officially has arrived with his first LP entitled "Alegranza!" - a collection of chaotic ambiance sung aloud en español.

Díaz-Reixa embraces the AC formula, but charges forward full-speed ahead to an almost house music caliber of hyperactivity, combining the layered looping drones of Panda Bear, Animal Collective's synchronized schizophrenia and tribal thump and the upbeat ubiquity of hip-hop maven MIA with multicultural flare.
But will El Guincho be able to survive with sounds so reminiscent of '07 while at the hands of a music industry that moves at the speed of light?
Survey says: sí.
