The spring season is fast approaching, bringing events that offer the opportunity to enjoy the warm weather and make a difference in the community.
The Prevent Child Abuse Walk, hosted by Prevent Child Abuse Athens and St. Mary's Health Care System, seeks to raise awareness of child abuse and neglect.
"Prevent Child Abuse Athens is sponsoring the walk as a way to help raise money to directly combat child abuse," said Linda Bigelow, a founder of the benefit and Prevent Child Abuse Athens board member.

"We focus primarily on prevention," said Paula Shilton, executive director of Prevent Child Abuse Athens. "We teach parenting skills to new mothers and fathers, provide them with emotional support and refer them to community resources."
This marks the third year the walk has been held. The previous years drew close to 200 walkers and Bigelow expects to surpass that number this year.
"April is also Child Abuse Prevention Month, so Athens Mayor Heidi Davison will be present to read a proclamation," Shilton said.
The two-mile course begins and ends at St. Mary's and travels along Baxter Street. Benefit T-shirts also will be available for $12.
Prevent Child Abuse Athens will plant a collection of 440 pinwheels at the front of St. Mary's. Each represents a child Prevent Child Abuse Athens has helped, Shilton said.
"The display creates a powerful statement," Bigelow said.
