CAITHNESS

Sophomore Krystle Caithness tied for sixth individually at the 2008 World Amateur Team Golf Championships in Adelaide, Australia.

Caithness, representing Scotland, finished at even-par 290 for the 72-hole event with a final round score of 75.

"A top-10 finish at a world competition is an outstanding accomplishment," Georgia coach Kelley Hester told georgiadogs.com.

"If you look at the leader board, the top-20 finishers reads like a 'Who's Who' of international golfers who compete collegiality in the U.S. Krystle proved she deserves to be one of the top names in the group."

Caithness entered the final tied for third, five shots behind the leader Sweden's Caroline Hedwall, a freshman at Oklahoma State.

Of the top-12 individual finishers, Caithness was the only one representing a Southeastern Conference school.

Golf ties for first place at tournament

The No. 6 men's golf team overcame a huge deficit to move into a tie for first place at the Brickyard Collegiate Championship in Macon.

The Bulldogs came into yesterday's round 10-shots behind Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech and shot a 5-over 285 on Sunday to move into a three-way tie for first.

"I could not be prouder of our guys," Georgia coach Chris Haack told georgiadogs.com. "These players do not have the word 'quit' in their vocabulary. It was good to see them maintain their focus and get back in the hunt. As a coach, that's all you can ever ask for."

Sophomore and Macon native Russell Henley led the second-round charge with a 2-under 68 and is tied for fourth individually, two shots behind Penn State's Nick Archambault.

Sophomore Harris English, the 2007 Brickyard medalist, and junior Hudson Swafford each signed for a 2-over 72 and are 14th and 26th on the individual leader board respectively.

Tennis team's play inconsistent

Georgia will return to Athens without any championship hardware from the All-America Championships for the first time since 2005.

After juniors Nate Schnugg and Jamie Hunt were each defeated in the second round of the singles draw on Thursday at the D D'Novo/ITA All-America Championships in Tulsa, Okla., they still had a chance to make a run in the doubles side of the tournament.

On Friday, however, the Bulldogs duo was bested by Tulsa's Arnau Brugues and Phil Stevens, 8-5 effectively ending their trip in the Midwest.

Head coach Manuel Diaz said he was encouraged by the performance of his top two players despite the results.

"We played very well at times, but also a little inconsistent," Diaz said in a statement to georgiadogs.com. "Hopefully we can learn from this match. We need to take care of our serves a little better.

"We returned very well and broke serve three times in this match, but we were a little careless in serves and taking advantage of opportunities when we had them. Overall it was a step in the right direction for both of theses guys. We are getting better."

Next weekend, the team travels to Lexington, Ky. for the ITA Regionals beginning on Thursday.
