Reports to: Editorial Adviser, Publisher, Board of Directors
Brief Description: Top student staffer for the editorial department. Responsible for setting the tone of the newspaper through columns, institutional editorials and general direction of the news, sports, variety, photo departments and copy desk. Serves as a liaison with departments within the newspaper and as the newspaper's representative in the community.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serves as a guiding spirit of the editorial staff. Sets the tone for the
editorial department. Conducts weekly meetings with editorial staff.
Provides feedback to the staff on the quality of the paper through such
things as written and oral critiques. Sets long-range goals for the news,
opinions, sports and variety desks.
- Serves as a recruiter in newswriting courses, meetings of the Society of
Professional Journalists, National Association of Black Journalists and
booths at the Tate Student Center. Coordinates these appearances with the
recruitment editor and adviser.
- Serves as newspaper's ambassador to the community. Actively seeks to meet
with other organizations, including fraternities, sororities, residence
hall associations to discuss coverage. Replies to complaints from readers
and sources.
- Acts as a liaison with advertising and production departments. Attends
weekly department heads meetings. Is the only editorial staffer designated
to address other departments with concerns, only after bringing it to the
editorial adviser or publisher first.
- Ensures that before each semester begins, each desk editor maps out a
plan for each week's special pages (Football Page, AfterHours, etc.). All
stories should be edited and sent to the appropriate copy editor three days
prior to publication. Football Page - Stories must be to Sports copy editor
by Tuesday afternoon for Friday's publishing. Deadline for entire page is
Wednesday at 3 p.m. Afterhours - with the exception of movie listings -
stories must be to Variety copy editor by Monday afternoon for Thursday's
publishing. Deadline for entire page is Tuesday at 3 p.m. All special pages
must have a backup plan.
- Serves as personnel manager, with the responsibility for hiring and
firing staffers and evaluating the performance of the staff. The one
exception is the managing editor: The editor in chief and managing editor
can only be dismissed by the board of directors. Helps determine editorial
budget in conjunction with managing editor, publisher and adviser.
- Along with the managing editor works with desks to plan in-depth projects
or series of articles, including necessary art and layout as well as
special page requests and meeting early deadlines.
- Oversees editorial page content and supervises the opinions editor, who
handles the layout, design and editing duties of the page. Shares
responsibility with the opinions editor, managing editor and other staffers
for writing institutional editorials. Creates and leads an editorial board
to determine the newspaper's views on issues of the day. Writes a regular
column. Determines, along with the opinions editor, who regular columnists
and cartoonists will be, seeking a mix of styles and viewpoints.
- Runs weekly staff meeting and creates weekly staff newsletter.
- On late night helps the chief copy editor oversee the workings of the
copy desk. Responsible for helping copy editors meet R&B and AP style
guidelines, as well as helping copy editors with page design, headline
writing and editing.
- Along with the managing editor reads all front page copy before it goes
to the copy desk.
- On late night, responsible for making sure page flow is within reason.
- On late night, works with front page editor to clear front page by 10:00
each night
- On late night, if 10:30 deadline isn't met, must e-mail a report to the
editorial adviser and publisher explaining why
- Responsible for any inappropriate behavior by staff, including any
inaccurate reporting. Situations should be brought to the adviser and
publisher's attention.
Suggested Experience: Four semesters of work in the newsroom, preferably including stints as a reporter, assistant news editor, managing editor, copy editor and desk editor in opinions, sports or entertainment. Should have complete understanding of the news desk and other editorial operations.

Reports To: Editor in chief
Brief Description: Second-in-command of the editorial department, responsible for its day to day operation. Runs daily budget meetings and selects stories for page 1. Helps set the tone of the newspaper's coverage.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serves as the traffic cop, coordinating coverage and settling disputes
among the editorial department's five desks: news, sports, entertainment,
photo and copy.
- Responsible for the mechanics of putting out the paper every day, seeing
that deadlines are met and various desks are adequately covering their
areas.
- Oversees travel requests, staff pay changes, supply orders, pay vouchers,
long-distance forms and other departmental paperwork.
- Should be available to answer desk editors' routine questions, keeping
early office hours and making rounds of each desk as budgets are put
together. Should help influence the day's budget, rather than be surprised
at budget meeting.
- Helps determine editorial budget in conjunction with managing editor,
publisher and adviser.
- Serves on editorial board.
- Attends weekly department heads meetings.
- Ensures that before each semester begins, each desk editor maps out a
plan for each week's special pages (Football Page, AfterHours, etc.). All
stories should be edited and sent to the appropriate copy editor three days

- Works with advertising in keeping abreast of paper sizes, including any
requests for an increase or decrease in paper size according to editorial's
space needs.
- Holds weekly prior planning meeting with desk editors to set the
direction of the paper for the following week.
- Oversees daily distribution of pages to desk editors.
- Runs daily budget meeting at 5 p.m., at which each desk presents its
story and illustration offerings for the next day's paper. Desk editors are
to battle for best play, and the managing editor should decide what appears
on page 1.
- Ensures desk editors have next day photo requests in by 7:00 the night
before. Weekend assignments are due Thursday at 7 p.m. (Monday's requests
publish in Wednesday's paper) . Photo editor or chief photographer must be
informed of any special requests.
- Responsible for working with chief copy editor to update the R&B style
cheat sheet.
- Must see that copy desk functions properly. Helps the chief copy editor
oversee the workings of the copy desk. Responsible for helping copy editors
meet R&B and AP style guidelines as well as helping copy editors with page
design, headline writing and editing.
- Reads all front page copy before it goes to the copy desk.
- Responsible for informing production of any late stories.
- Responsible for making sure page flow is within reason.
- Works with front page editor to clear front by 10:00 each night
- If deadline isn't met, must e-mail a report to the editorial adviser and
publisher explaining why.
Suggested Experience: Three semesters of work at the newspaper, including stints as reporter, assistant news editor, news editor, copy editor and desk editor in opinions, sports or entertainment. Must know style thoroughly. Needs keen sense of what's newsworthy.

Reports To: Managing Editor
Brief Description: Responsible for a staff of reporters covering local and university news and features.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee the news operation, supervising the associate news editor, new
writers editor and all news staff writers, stringers and contributing
writers. Responsible for all news copy that appears in the paper.
- Before the semester begins, budgets expected expenses, such as travel
costs to Board of Regents meetings. Pre-approves travel requests for staff.
- Maintains a futures book, daily calendar or other system to keep track of
what stories are assigned and need to be followed up. Responsible for
seeing that all necessary stories and photos are assigned. Should ensure
each night that a sufficient number of stories are assigned to cover the
next day's news hole, making sure each staffer has something to work on.
- Responsible for making photo and graphic assignments by established
deadlines. Also approves all photo assignments made by staff. Must have
next day photo requests in by 7:00 the night before. Weekend assignments
are due Thursday at 7 p.m. (Monday's requests publish in Wednesday's
paper). Photo Editor or Chief Photographer must be informed of any special
requests.
- Responsible for structuring beat system for covering campus, local area
then assigning reporters and stringers to each beat. Responsible for hiring
staff writers and stringers with approval of managing editor and editor in
chief. Should know the abilities and reliability of news staffers and
assign responsibilities accordingly. Can demote staff writers, stringers
who fail to meet their responsibilities, but only with approval and
presence of the managing editor. Responsible for providing Managing Editor
with information on any staff changes.
- Has final edit for all news copy before sending it on the Managing
Editor or Editor in Chief (front page stories) or copy desk (all inside
copy). Should never be the first to edit a story, delegating that
responsibility to the associate news editor or new writers editor.
- Attends budget meetings daily, presenting an explanation of the stories
available for the next day's paper and making a case for those stories the
News Editor determines are worthy of page 1.
- Attends weekly prior planning meeting, presenting a budget of stories
expected from news reporters the following week.
- Attends weekly staff meeting with writers and other editorial staffers.
Is responsible for seeing that all editorial staff writers attend the
meeting.
- Responsible for staff writers meeting their weekly story requirements.
- Responsible for setting work schedule for entire news department and
submitting it to the Managing Editor.
- Responsible for reporters' inappropriate behavior or any inaccurate

Reports To: News Editor
Brief Description: Supervises news desk beat reporters,including all staff writers and stringers. Serves as acting News Editor in the editor's absence.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversees beat reporters on news desk, coordinating beat coverage between
staff writers and stringers. Assigns stories when necessary. Beat reporters
should be responsible for developing the bulk of their stories.
- Assists News Editor in structuring beat system for covering campus and
local area, then assigning reporters and stringers to each beat.
- Should work with reporters before, during and after the reporting process
to ensure coverage is complete before deadline.
- Assists News Editor in seeing that all necessary stories and photos are
assigned prior to established deadlines.
- Handles first edit of all stories by beat reporters. Should ensure that
beat reporters remain in the newsroom while their stories are being edited.
Reporters should sit with the editor and observe the editing process, being
available to answer questions.
- In the absence of the News Editor, attends daily budget meeting
- In absence of the News Editor, responsible for making photo and graphic
assignments. Also approves all photo assignments made by staff.
- Attends the weekly prior planning budget meeting, presenting a budget of
stories expected from news desk reporters the following week.
- Attends weekly staff meeting along with writers. Is responsible for
seeing that all beat reporters attend staff meeting.
- Should know status of every story assigned to beat reporters, expected to
push writers to meet deadline.
- Along with News Editor is expected to be available each night to help
news copy editor with content, including headlines and cutlines, until news

- Responsible for reporters' inappropriate behavior or any inaccurate

- Picks five, 5- to 6-inch briefs for QuickTake and routes to QuickTake
editor every day except Wednesday (Afterhours).

Brief Description: Responsible for all sports coverage, including game previews, reviews and features. Also sports news, such as NCAA allegations and coach hiring/firings.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversees the sports desk, including all sports staff writers, stringers
and contributing writers. Responsible for all sports copy that appears in
the paper.
- Structures beat system and assigns reporters and stringers to cover
campus sports events. Ensures two staff reporters and one or two stringers
for football; and one staff reporter and one stringer each for gymnastics
and men's and women's basketball; and finally, one stringer for intramural
sports.
- At the beginning of the semester, sets a budget for expenses each
semester and works to stay within it. Pre-approves travel requests from
staff.
- Before fall semester begins, map out a plan for each week's football page
and any other special pages as outlined in enterprise bonus packet. For
football page stories must be to Sports copy editor by Tuesday afternoon.
Final deadline for page is Wednesday at 3 p.m. All football pages must have
a backup plan.

submitting it to the Managing Editor.

in the newspaper for readers to identify with.

Brief Description: Responsible for all local and campus entertainment articles, including event previews, CD/movie/book reviews and listings of upcoming events.

- Before semester begins, budgets expected expenses, such as travel to
movie previews, and submits it to the Managing Editor.

Recruitment Editor - (Download pdf application)
Reports To: News Editor
Brief Description: Recruits and trains new writers for the news desk.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for recruiting new writers to the paper by appearing before
basic newswriting classes, meetings of the Society of Professional
Journalists, National Association of Black Journalists, etc. and booths at
the Tate Center and job fairs to encourage participation at The Red &
Black. Coordinates all these appearances with the Editor in Chief and
adviser.
- Conducts at least two new writers meetings each quarter to attract new
talent to the paper. Responsible for setting the times of these meetings
and working with advertising and production departments to place house ads
in the paper announcing these meetings. Also posts flyers and contacts
journalism professors.
- Works closely with all new writers, assigning them stories and coaching
them through the reporting process. Provide sources to contact and provide
a list of basic questions for at least their first story. Must be able to
answer questions about the campus and local area, and be able to tell new
reporters where to find answers to their questions.
- Responsible for compiling story ideas to assign to contributing writers.
Should work with all desk editors to verify staff is not working on similar
ideas.
- Should explain to new writers some basic style rules for writing a news
story. Also demonstrate how to use the computers and phones.
- Follow up with new writers so they don't fall through the cracks.
- Set aside office times to meet with new writers to ensure you are
available when they are writing stories.
- Handles first edit for contributing writer stories before sending the
copy to the news, sports or variety desk for a final edit.
- Assists new writers with assigning photos and graphics for stories.
- Attends weekly staff meeting and is responsible for inviting contributing
writers to attend.
- Works closely with all desk editors to determine if and when contributing
writers are ready to assume greater responsibilities as stringers, or
possibly, staff writers.
- Once a new writer has been promoted to stringer, be sure to continue to
help them until they feel comfortable in the newsroom.
- Before semester's end, responsible for compiling a list of semester's
contributors, their current status, as well as a list of prospective
stringers or staff writers.
- As time allows, helps the News Editor or Associate News Editor with editing.

Reports To: Editor in Chief
Brief Description: Designs, edits and helps write content for daily opinions page.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for layout, design and editing of daily opinions page.
- Responsible, along with the Editor in Chief, for selecting and editing
letters to the editor for publication, keeping them short and readable.
Longer letters would be considered for guest columnist spots.
- Writes weekly Opinion Meter based on past week's top topics.
- Helps write daily institutional editorials, per direction of Editor in
Chief and editorial board. Serves on editorial board.
- Helps Editor in Chief determine columnists and cartoonists for opinions
page, seeking a mix of styles and subject matter.
- Responsible for bringing controversial editorial cartoons, columns and
letters to editorial board before running in the paper.
- Works with columnists to improve their work prior to columns being published.
- Verifies all letters to the editor by calling the person who submitted
the letter for confirmation.
- Works with advertising and production to set up in-house ads to solicit
columns. Also posts flyers on campus to let people know they have an outlet
for their opinion in the paper. When certain topics arise, opinions editor
should contact experts from the University about writing a column.
- Encouraged to take mug shots of columnists so as to help out photography.
- Along with the Editor in Chief, leads regular meetings of the editorial
board.
- Attends weekly editorial staff meeting.
- Attends weekly prior planning meeting, to get an idea of what issues and
stories will be appearing in the paper the following week.
- Responsible for any inappropriate behavior by columnists or cartoonists
including any inaccurate reporting. Situations should be brought to the
editor in chief, managing editor, adviser and/or publisher's attention.

Brief Description: Responsible for all photos assigned by news, entertainment and sports desks and other editors, as well as the advertising department.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversees the photo department, including Chief Photographer and all other
photographers. Responsible for quality and composition of all photos that
appear in the paper.
- Works with desk editors to have next day photo requests in by 7:00 the
night before. Weekend assignments are due Thursday at 7 p.m. (Monday's
requests publish in Wednesday's paper). Photo Editor or Chief Photographer
must be informed of any special requests.
- Works with desk editors, managing editor, editor in chief to select
photos for publication, although Editor in Chief and Managing Editor have
final choice over photo selection.
- Checks budget daily in order to work with desk editors and reporters on
coming up with photo ideas for upcoming stories
- Should develop a working relationship with each desk editor to ensure a
smooth flow of communication between the newsroom and darkroom. Should set
up and maintain any system, such as a photo log or daily calendar,
necessary to enhance such communication. Should meet daily with each desk
editor prior to budget meeting to collect assignments, review photos and
discuss photos for the next day's paper.
- Responsible for providing desk editors with information to accompany
photos, especially names (with correct spelling), class standings,
hometowns of people in photos, and any other information that would help

Brief Description: Shoots and processes photos deemed a priority by the Photo Editor. Serves as acting Photo Editor in the editor's absence.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for taking the bulk of photos assigned by newsroom staff.
- Responsible for taking at least one feature photo suitable for page one
display each day.
- Responsible for collecting information to accompany photos, especially
names (with correct spelling), class standings, hometowns of people in
photos and any other information that would help the copy editor explain
the photo in a sentence or two.
- Works with desk editors to have next day photo requests in by 7:00 the
night before. Weekend assignments are due Thursday at 7 p.m. (Monday's
requests publish in Wednesday's paper). Photo Editor or Chief Photographer
must be informed of any special requests.
- Check budget daily in order to work with desk editors and reporters on

Staff Writer - Level I - (Download pdf application)
Reports To: Desk editor (news, sports, variety)
Brief Description: Top writing position at the paper, covering a beat assigned by the desk editor.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for writing three stories, at least 8 inches in length, each
week.
- Covers a beat as assigned by the desk editor, responsible for developing
sources on the beat and creating story ideas for both the staff writer and
stringer on the beat. Should develop at least three workable story ideas
each week. Meets with main sources at the beginning of each semester.
- Assists stringer assigned to the beat in developing, researching,
reporting and writing stories.
- Completes a major investigative or enterprise project each semester under
an agreed upon deadline with Associate News Editor, News Editor or Managing
Editor.
- Remains in the newsroom after each story is written to answer editors'
questions. Should sit with editors reading story to answer questions and
learn about the editing process.
- Attends weekly staff meeting
- Submits weekly planning budget outlining stories and art for the week ahead
- Makes photo or graphic assignments for every story.
Suggested Experience: Two semesters writing at the paper, including stints as a Level II staff writer, contributing writer and stringer. Ideally should spend a full semester covering a beat as a Level II staff writer before moving up to Level I Staff Writer.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for writing three stories, at least 8 inches in length, each
week.
- Covers a beat as assigned by the desk editor, responsible for developing
sources on the beat and creating story ideas for both the staff writer and
stringer on the beat. Should develop at least three workable story ideas
each week. Meets with main sources at the beginning of each quarter.
- Assists stringer assigned to the beat in developing, researching,
reporting and writing stories.
- Completes a major investigative or enterprise project each quarter under
an agreed upon deadline with Associate News Editor, News Editor or Managing
Editor.
- Remains in the newsroom after each story is written to answer editors'
questions. Should sit with editors reading story, to answer questions and
learn about the editing process.
- Attends weekly staff meeting
- Submits weekly planning budget outlining stories and art for the week ahead
- Makes photo or graphic assignments for every story.
Suggested Experience: One semester writing at the paper, including stints as a contributing writer and stringer. Ideally should spend a full semester covering a beat as a stringer before taking over as staff writer for the beat.

- Helps staff writer report a major investigative or enterprise project
each semester
- Helps cover a beat as assigned by the desk editor. Responsible for
helping staff writer to develop sources on the beat and create story ideas
for both the staff writer and the stringer assigned to the beat. Should
develop at least two workable story ideas each week. Meets with main
sources at beginning of each semester.
- Remains in newsroom after each story is written to answer editors'
questions. Should sit with the editors reading the story, to answer
questions and learn about the editing process.

Reports To: Recruitment Editor
Brief Description: Entry point for all new writers at the paper; unpaid writing position.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for three stories as a contributing writer before being
considered for a paid stringer position. Experienced writers who show an
impressive grasp of newswriting concepts can be moved ahead at the
discretion of the News, Variety or Sports Editor if the staff has an
opening that must be filled.
- Meets with the Recruitment Editor to discuss story ideas and story
development, including sources, interviews, writing style and editing.
- Must meet deadlines imposed by Recruitment Editor, except when deadline
is renegotiated with the editor.
- Responsible for reading and understanding contents of new writers guide.
Should learn as much as possible about newswriting, including style rules
and libel law.
Suggested Experience: Eagerness and interest in writing for a newspaper. Should be familiar with proper grammar and spelling, although no formal journalism training is necessary.
Chief Copy Editor/Slot Editor - (Download pdf application)
Reports To: Managing Editor
Brief Description: Supervises and trains copy editors. Shares front page copy editing duties. Determines placement of inside copy
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversees the copy desk, supervising the copy editors and UGA
Today/Briefly editor. Responsible for the look of the paper, including all
headlines, skel lines and cutlines, final editing of all copy and graphics
and cropping of photos. Maintains Red & Black style in all editions.
- Shares front page copy editing duties with front page copy editor. As
front page editor, is responsible for designing the page, writing all
headlines, skel lines and cutlines, cropping photos and giving all copy and
graphics a final edit for style, grammar and spelling, as well as any
discrepancies or errors of fact that may appear. Should resolve such errors
or discrepancies by checking with the desk editor responsible for the story.
- Trains all copy editors in the fundamentals of page layout, headline
writing and copy editing, as well as Quark XPress computer layout system.
Holds training sessions for new copy editors at the beginning of each
semester, and continues training as the semester progresses.
- Responsible for working with Managing Editor to update the R&B style
cheat sheet.
- Assigns copy editors to news, sports, variety sections according to ability.
- Helps copy editors design special pages.
- Attends daily budget meetings to learn placement of stories, and
determines with managing editor those stories and art elements that will
fit on page 1.
- Schedules and conducts weekly meetings with Editor in Chief, Managing
Editor, Editorial Adviser and copy editors to critique past issues and
discuss new ideas and techniques for layout, design and editing.
- Proofs UGA Today/Briefly section daily
- Can implement new style rules concerning headlines layouts, graphics with
approval of Editor in Chief, Managing Editor and Publisher.
- Attends weekly prior planning meeting to learn what stories are expected
from the news, sports and variety desks the following week.
- Attends weekly staff meeting and is responsible for seeing that all copy
editors attend the staff meeting.
- Should be held responsible if a story runs that is poorly edited.
- Sets specific hours for copy editors to be at work. Must see the inside
pages through production three nights a week, delegating these duties to
other copy editors two nights a week or where appropriate.
- Responsible for dummying pages on the computer and assigning pages to
copy desk.
- Must be familiar with R&B style and AP style
- Should work with photographers and desk editors when designing pages
- Oversees special pages and special sections (i.e. AthensLiving, Holiday
Guide, Gift Guide, etc.) and appoints copy editors to above tasks.
- Responsible for informing production of any late stories.
- Responsible for making sure page flow is within reason.
- Works with front page editor to clear front page by 10:00 each night
- When 10:30 p.m. deadline isn't met, Managing Editor/Editor in Chief must
e-mail a report to the Editorial Adviser and Publisher explaining why
- Responsible for informing copy editors of mistakes and trends.
Suggested Experience: Two semesters as copy editor including stints as a reporter and desk editor. Must be familiar with Quark XPress software.

Brief Description: Designs, edits copy and writes headlines for front.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Shares front page copy editing duties with Chief Copy Editor.
- Responsible for designing all assigned pages. For front responsible for
writing all headlines, skel lines and cutlines, cropping photos and giving
all copy and graphics a final edit for style, grammar and spelling, as well
as any discrepancies or errors of fact that may appear. Should resolve such
errors or discrepancies by checking with the desk editors responsible for
the story.
- Must be familiar with R&B style and AP style
- Should to work with photographers and desk editors when designing pages
- Responsible for designing pages for all Red & Black-produced sections
including but not limited to AthensLiving, UGA101, Holiday Gift Guide,
Athenscape, etc.
- Expected to be dedicated to improving copy editing, headline writing and
design skills
- Attends weekly copy desk meeting.
- Attends weekly staff meeting along with other staffers.
- Aims to clear front page by 10:00 each night

Brief Description: Edits copy, writes headlines and designs designated inside pages
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for giving all copy and graphics a final edit for style,
grammar and spelling, as well as any discrepancies by checking with the
desk editor responsible for the story
- Designs assigned inside pages, writing all headlines, skel lines and
cutlines, and cropping photos
- After proofing page, copy editors must stay until page is sloted and
cleared by production.
- Responsible for editing copy and designing pages for all Red &
Black-produced sections as assigned including but not limited to
AthensLiving, UGA101, Holiday Gift Guide, Athenscape, etc.
- Expected to be dedicated to improving copy editing, headline writing and
design skills
- Must be familiar with R&B and AP stylebooks
- Should work with photographers and desk editors when designing pages
- Attends weekly copy desk meeting
- Attends weekly staff meeting
Suggested Experience: One semester in the newsroom, preferably as a reporter. Can be considered an entry-level position for someone with previous journalism experience elsewhere, including journalism coursework in newswriting, editing and page design.

Brief Description: Takes photos for the newspaper's various departments, including advertising, as assigned by Photo Editor.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Takes assignments and shoots photos as specified by Photo Editor, other
editors or writers.
- Works with reporters and desk editors on photo assignments.
- Gathers information for cutlines that clearly identify people in the photo
and what they are doing.
*Tries to find out at least one interesting fact to include in the cutline.
Suggested Experience: Must have a Digital SLR camera for use and know the basics of how to use it.

Duties and Responsibilities: *Required to produce at least four in-depth (25-40-inch) reporting projects during the quarter, using more time to conduct more extensive reporting. Will also produce at least two regular stories each week.
Suggested Experience: At least one quarter as staff writer.
