Five Eight gets more 'intimate'

By ANN CANTRELL

An earlier start time and a more intimate venue will not keep rock band Five Eight from delivering a lot of rock 'n' roll jamming. The band's show at the Melting Point Saturday will begin a lot earlier than most shows in Athens, allowing fans to be in bed by midnight. … 0 Comments

Band gets out of Scotland, in to 40 Watt

By MATTHEW GRAYSON

For Scottish pop group Camera Obscura, success is the result of hard work, determination and a little help from some lads in high places. When lead singer Tracyanne Campbell penned the opening track to 2006's "Let's Get Out of This Country," she merely sought to answer a question posed by English singer songwriter Lloyd Cole in his 1984 track "Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken?" The result, of course, is "Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken" - a clever and infectiously blissful sing-along recently nominated for best video of 2006 on MTV2. … 1 Comment

Acoustic quartet 'a different kind' of jazz ensemble

By SONIA SHARAN

It's clear from the composition of Dromedary Acoustic Quartet that it's not a typical jazz band. The group, which will play Friday at the Melting Point, is composed of Andrew Reissiger on the charango and guitar; Rob McMaken on the mandolin, dulcimer, cumbus, and guitar; Louis Romanos on ethnic percussion and Chris Enghauser on the upright bass. … 0 Comments

Kinchafoonee Cowboys a local staple

By JENNIFER PAXTON

In a town with such a diverse and unpredictable music scene, it can be refreshing to hear a familiar sound every once in a while. An Athens favorite, the Kinchafoonee Cowboys - composed of members Glen Tennyson (acoustic guitar and lead vocals), Chris Scarborough (lead guitar), Chad McGrath (bass guitar and background vocals), Keith Cromartie (drums), Jason Fuller (piano, organ and background vocals) and Shane Cannon (harmonica) - will play at the Georgia Theatre on Friday. … 0 Comments

The best bands show stylistic range

By MICHELLE FLOYD

Some of my favorite bands are the ones that can play a variety of styles of music. Take Modern Skirts, for example. That band can rock out the 40 Watt Club, but the members can also play some pretty enjoyable acoustic tunes in the middle of the day. Either way, I love them. … 0 Comments

CD Reviews for the Week of 1/18/07

'An Eight Song Tribute to Feeling Bad and Feeling Better' Allison Weiss Some guy somewhere sure owes Allison Weiss an apology. Or at least, it sure seems that way after listening to her eight song debut album. The gutsy 19-year-old singer-songwriter allows listeners to accompany her on a journey of growing up through various stages of, as her title tells us "feeling bad and feeling better. … 0 Comments

Although housed in a Grand Chapiteau - more commonly known as a Big Top - this is no ordinary circus. … 0 Comments
