UGA conducts study to find ways for people to run farther

Need a wake-up call? Grab a Cola. Miss your morning vitamins? Drink a Vitamin Water. Going for a run? Down a Gatorade. Want to run faster? The Coca-Cola Company is still brewing that one up. UGA researchers tested quercetin - a plant-dervied nutritional supplement - for its ability to improve exercise performance, on behalf of The Coca-Cola Company.

UGA Idol shares her wisdom

Auditions for UGA Idol, a campus-wide singing competition sponsored by Sigma Delta Tau, are Wednesday. This year, all of the proceeds are going to the philanthropy ugaMiracle. Sara Intner is the co-chair of the event and a member of Sigma Delta Tau. "We are looking for students at UGA who are musically talented, and also have a good personality," she said.

UGA in top 10 for sexual health

University No. 2 in SEC

The University beat Florida by 18 points on Friday - not in football, but in sexual health. Trojan released its annual "Sexual Health Report Card" Friday, and the University moved from ninth place in 2008 to sixth place this year, besting all other schools in the SEC except the University of South Carolina, which ranked No.

December commencement now requires tickets

Students will be given six tickets

For the first time since the 1980s, undergraduate students graduating in December must obtain tickets for their families to attend the commencement ceremony. Each undergraduate student eligible for December graduation will be allotted six general admission tickets, which will be dispersed beginning Nov.

UGA's writing centers cut operational hours

Center received $23,330 in funds

The $23,330 allocated to sustain campus writing centers won't be enough keep the tutoring services operating on the same hours, resulting in cuts to primary services to students. The allocation resulted from the Task Force on Writing, spearheaded by English professors Fran Teague and Nelson Hilton, who submitted suggestions to the Task Force on General Education and Student Learning.

UGA group joins national United We Serve campaign

Volunteer UGA, the University umbrella association for campus volunteer organizations, has aligned itself with the mission of the new national United We Serve campaign to further its goals of promoting community service among University students. At first a temporary campaign, but now a federal nationwide initiative, United We Serve focuses on helping those affected by the economic crisis in the United States.

Students befriend and assist disabled

Who doesn't need a friend? Best Buddies, a nonprofit organization, provides one-on-one friendship and job opportunities to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The University's chapter of Best Buddies College began four years ago, said Director Alaina Kemp, a senior from Evans.

Organization recycles for Habitat

It takes approximately 5 million recycled aluminum cans to build a $70,000 house in Athens said Nick Bennett, a senior from Douglasville. Bennett is one of three recycling coordinators of the UGA Habitat for Humanity recycling effort, "Cans for Habitat." The program collects and recycles aluminum cans, and uses the recycling funds to pay for housing in the Athens community.

Police caution students of magazine-selling scam

A scam involving door-to-door book and magazine sales is running in Athens, according to Athens-Clarke County Police. According to police, a white college-age male about 5 feet 8 inches tall and 150 pounds, claiming to work for an Internet company called MyDynastySales.

Deceased UGA employee leaves 'legacy of laughter'

University employee John Shores - known in the workplace for his scholarship, caring outlook and plentiful candy dish - was found dead in a disheveled InTown Suites hotel room Saturday. "As you might imagine, it's a sad day for us," said Bill Crowe, director of the Georgia Center for Continuing Education.

Beware the avalanche? GORP clinic to alert about dangers

An avalanche awareness clinic might seem like a bizarre event to have at a college in Georgia, or any place in the South for that matter. Avalanches have never been at the top of the list of threats to campus safety. However, because UGA tends to cover all the bases, there is an Avalanche Awareness Clinic this Wednesday at Ramsey.

Crimewatch Oct. 26-31

The following was reported by the University Police: Claudetta Meshay Bell had a warrant issued for seven counts of misdemeanor theft by taking on Oct. 26. Vincent Lee Vance was arrested and charged with failure to obey a traffic control device and driving without a license.
