This is where things ended a season ago for Georgia soccer. Fresh off an unlikely run to the SEC championship game, the Bulldogs earned an at-large NCAA tournament bid, before being derailed in the first round by the Colonial Athletic Association's James Madison, 1-0.
In Stegeman Coliseum, and every other NCAA basketball arena, pre-game ceremonies culminate with the introduction of the starting lineup of each team, followed by their coach. But Georgia fans won't hear Georgia Basketball public address announcer David Johnston announce new coach Mark Fox during the pre-game introductions when the Bulldogs tip off their season opener, and the first of Fox's tenure at Georgia, against New Orleans on Friday night.
What a way to start a season. The 2009-10 basketball season opens up for the Lady Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon in Stegeman Coliseum as they welcome a 2009 Final Four team in the Oklahoma Sooners. The No. 8 Sooners posted an impressive 32-5 record last season but will look somewhat smaller in 2010 as the graduation of superstar center Courtney Paris will undoubtedly alter Oklahoma's game plan.
With just five games remaining in the 2009 regular season, the Bulldogs (15-11, 6-9 SEC) still have an outside chance of making their first NCAA Tournament since 2004. In order to join the 64-team field, Georgia will most likely need to win four of its final five matches - not an easy task considering the opponents traveling to Athens this weekend.
