Although Athens-Clarke County Police have known his name and address since last Tuesday, the suspect in a reported rape at College Place Apartments has not yet been arrested.

Many students living in the complex, located off West Broad Street behind Arby's, said they have not been informed of either the rape or the fact that the alleged rapist is a resident there.

Last Tuesday a 19-year-old University student reported to police she had been raped by a male acquaintance while at his party in College Place Apartments on West Broad Street.

According to Athens-Clarke County Police Spokeswoman Hilda Sorrow, no arrests have been made because police are unable to locate the suspect.

ACC Police knew his name and address last Tuesday when a report was filed, according to police reports.

When informed of the rape, Kierston Trinoskey, a senior from Fayetteville who lives in College Place, said she was shocked and upset that apartment management had not informed residents.

"Finding out that a rape occurred so close to where I live is extremely frightening," Trinoskey said. "The fact that the assailant hasn't been apprehended yet is even worse. It doesn't feel safe to go run or walk your dog anymore - how horrible."

ACC Police Maj. Alan Brown said police still are investigating the case.

"If you catch someone doing something, then you can arrest them right then," Brown said. "You have to collect a certain amount of evidence before you can make an arrest."

The rape, which reportedly occurred in the early morning hours of April 25, was not reported to police until last Tuesday evening when the student went to the University Health Center.

Brown said police want to make sure they have enough evidence before they make an arrest.

"There are some more things that they want to find out though," Brown said. "We want to make sure the prosecutor has enough to make a case."

Some residents said they don't feel safe knowing the suspect still is on the loose.

"I think that it kind of scares me that someone can be on the loose like that," said Tymara Alexander, a junior from Douglasville.

The management with the apartment complex had no comment.
