While aimlessly driving around in search of a parking spot each day, have you ever wondered what the most popular type of car on campus is?

According to the Parking Services database, the most popular car on campus is the Honda Accord, followed by the Honda Civic, said Jennifer Tougas, computer services specialist for Parking Services.

"I would say a Jeep Wrangler or a Honda Civic (would be most popular) - probably a Honda Civic - and Volvo station wagons. Everyone drives those," said Jason Hardman, a senior in political science.

Many students would guess sport-utility vehicles are the most popular cars on campus, and they are almost right. The Jeep Cherokee and the Ford Explorer are the third and fourth most popular student vehicles.

"I'd say a Ford Explorer. Next I guess would be a Honda Civic or Sentra," said Eric Burkett, a freshman majoring in education .

Burkett also said he thought the most popular colors are probably black and forest green.

The most popular colors of cars are actually red, white and black, Tougas said.

"I'd say red, black and blue are the most popular colors," said former University student Heidi Owens.

Owens said she would guess the most popular car would be "an SUV, you know like a Honda Passport."

Vance Byrd, a senior studying history and German, guessed it would be "one of those sport utility things.

"All those things are the same. I really don't know car models or anything like that."

Byrd also said he felt small cars are popular.

"I've heard people wanting those new (Volkswagen) Bugs," Byrd said.

Although this data search gives a reasonable representation of the most popular vehicles on campus, the database findings aren't perfectly accurate because the computer can't take into account spelling errors, Tougas said. For example, the computer wouldn't recognize an entry of "blck" as "black," Tougas said.
