The Student Government Association is offering to build Web sites free of charge for any University student organization.
"This is something I've wanted to do for a while," said Miles Garrison, chair of SGA's technology committee and a junior from Charlotte, N.C. "And one of the main points of SGA is to help students."
Student organizations interested in having a site built should visit SGA's Web site (www.uga.edu/sga) and fill out the form found on the site.
Garrison estimated it will take a couple of weeks to complete sites after student organizations have submitted all of their requests.
"They're very basic, but functional," he said.
Once the sites are constructed, it will become each organization's responsibility to maintain and update its own site, Garrison said.
"We'll set it up, then it's theirs," he said.
Organizations will be able to select a color scheme for their site as well as determine the basic layout of the page.
One of the first groups to express interest in the new project was the University's Mock Trial team, and the organization currently is working with SGA on the construction of the site.
Mock Trial Team faculty adviser Stefanie Lindquist said a Web site will enable team members to communicate better with one another as well as offer more publicity for the organization, which could attract new members.
"This is fabulous to have someone willing to build us one," said Lindquist, an associate professor of political science.
Mock trial teams at most other colleges have Web sites, Lindquist said and SGA's new program will allow the University's team to join their ranks.
SGA President Latham Saddler said he was impressed with the task the technology committee is undertaking, particularly since it is one of SGA's newest committees.
"This definitely proves that this committee is out to reach students," said Saddler, a junior from Charlotte, N.C.
Expressing confidence in the committee, Saddler said he has no doubts the group will be able to deal with the demand for the sites.
"They'll be able to whip them up pretty quickly," he said.
