After falling behind 16-0 against Vanderbilt, Georgia (15-3, 2-2 SEC) led for all but the first two minutes of Sunday's contest against the Crimson Tide (8-11, 1-3).
"We got a lot more things right today than we did against Auburn and Vanderbilt," said head coach Andy Landers.
Senior forward Tasha Humphrey entered the game five points shy of 2,000 for her career and wasted no time in reaching her milestone, becoming the fifth player in Lady Bulldog history to do so.
After accomplishing the feat in the first five minutes, Humphrey was far from done for the day, as she went on to shoot 10-13 from the field and 3-3 from 3-point range for a season-high 25 points.
"I thought it was easily Tasha's best game of the year," Landers said.
"There was no question that she ran the floor better and shot the ball better than she had all year, and her teammates did a good job of getting her the ball."
For Humphrey, the 25 points in the game were more important than the 2,000 for her career.
"If I score my 2,000th point in a loss, that doesn't say much," Humphrey said. "In order to come out here and get this basketball team on the right page, I know I have to step up and be a leader, and that's what I tried to do today."
Even sweeter for Humphrey and the rest of the Lady Bulldogs was the appearance of nearly 50 former players on hand for Georgia's annual alumni function.
Among the alumnae was Teresa Edwards, the color analyst for FOX SportsNet's telecast, and who Humphrey passed on the all-time points list last Thursday at Vanderbilt.
"Having all the alumni back and seeing what they've done here served as a motivation to us because we know they've built a legacy, and we're trying to preserve that," Humphrey said. "We came out with that fire and intensity that made Georgia basketball what it is."
With the win, Georgia avoided what would have been the fourth three-game losing streak in Landers' 29-year tenure.
The Lady Bulldogs improved to 11-0 this season at Stegeman Coliseum.
