Freshman Andrew Maley beat the notorious 15. No, not the extra pounds caused by visits to Bolton Dining Commons - the 15 other UGA Idol finalists in last Thursday's competition.
Maley, who sang John Legend's "So High," was awarded the grand prize of $500 and a spot in April's Campus Superstar competition in Atlanta.
"I honestly would have hated to be a judge - there was so much talent this year," Maley said. "I thought I'd be up there (in the top five) but I was so excited to actually win."
Adam Klein, UGA Hillel program director, said this year's talent was phenomenal.
"(Maley) said that we would not expect his voice to come out of his body, and sure enough he hops up there with a baseball cap and jeans and just has the most amazing voice," Klein said.
Although Maley plans to spend his prize money on basic student expenses, he has bigger plans for the potential $5,000 prize of Campus Superstar.
"I would probably invest about $3,000 of it in a money marketing account or something," he said.
In addition to being a music major, Maley also is planning to acquire a music business certificate. "Ideally, I'd like to (one day) have a career as a recording artist," he said.
The Spartanburg, S.C. native believes that his win last Thursday had brought him one step closer to that goal. "Winning was a big confidence builder, and good exposure, too," he said.
The Campus Superstar event also is sponsored by Hillels of Georgia.
Maley, along with four other finalists - sophomore Kevin Character, freshman biology major Marcus Hines, freshman Christina Turner and sophomore pre-business major Paul Smith - will travel to Atlanta for the competition on April 1.
