A University student has been charged with first-degree felony forgery for manufacturing fake identification cards.

Corey Clifton Tabor, 21, was arrested by undercover agents working with the University Police Criminal Investigations Division when he attempted to sell the officers a fake ID Saturday on Baxter Street.

Police conducted a two-month investigation after recovering two similar fake ID cards, according to the police report. Sgt.

Aubrey Epps of the Athens-Clarke County police Vice Unit placed an order for a fake ID, and undercover officers met Tabor to buy it for $40.

As police searched Tabor's residence at Whistlebury Condominiums on North Avenue at 4 p.m., police recovered driver's licenses for Georgia and other states, according to the report. Tabor was arrested and transported to the Clarke County Jail.

Penalties for first-degree forgery can result in one to five years of imprisonment, according to georgiadefenders.com

Prosecutors likely will seek additional charges when they present the case to a grand jury, Epps told the Athens Banner-Herald Wednesday.

Tabor's arrest is the second for an alleged fake ID ring in less than a year.

Thirteen University students were arrested and charged with fake ID possession and distribution in March 2007.

University Police were alerted to the situation by a U.S. Postal Inspector who found a shipment of fraudulent IDs mailed from the University in February.

Being intelligent enough to be able to attend the University of Georgia doesn't guarantee that the student is smart enough to do as he/she ought to do. (Continued…)

Coastal, who cares if he was making some money off of this. He wasn't selling crack and polluting the community. He was just making fake ID's to help other students have a good time in college. (Continued…)

There's far more to this unlawful conduct that most people appreciate.

Yeah, the ID's would "most likely" be used for purchasing alcohol. But, might there be some liability for this dude for any death or property damage that might have occurred because of his desire to make a few bucks and help people have a good time, much like a bar might be held liable for serving alcohol to underage drinkers?

On another note, these fake ID's could also be used to perpetuate identity theft. (Continued…)

Given the lack of fairness re the drinking age and the penchant for U.GA. and ACCPD to sometimes act like the SS, I think Tabor could be thought of as a hero by students and young people. (Continued…)

Maybe it's so difficult to deport illegal aliens because they all have a fake ID. Way to go, muchacho!

Great point, Carlos! But the feds the GBI and UGA PD certainly can't find any illegal aliens in Clarke County, GA, but they sure are good at finding 18-20 yo kids whose major offense is having a cold one!

It's just an ID. Worry about more important things, seriously.

I'm getting sort of concerned about our police departments...

Revo, you make a good point. Our police do nothing but round up kids with fake IDs and give out jaywalking tickets. (Continued…)
