GPA irrelevant for future jobs, A+ unneeded

Samantha Knoll, you managed to miss the humble boat as you listed your greatest accomplishments to your peers, while briefly mentioning the need for the addition of the A+ to the grading scale.

Although I applaud your good grades, I am not sure all classes or all majors are on the same playing field. You have never been in a class where the teacher will not give above a 93 or where the average grade on a test is a 35. Your "rigorous schedule" does not require classes that science majors dread and rightly complain about (organic chemistry, biochemistry or cell biology).

Since changing my major, I have to carry my subpar (compared to your 4.0) GPA around as I shop for graduate schools in the upcoming year. I hope you are applying to another school because, as most college graduates would argue, a GPA means nothing once you leave college.

If the Univeristy is your last academic destination, the least you could do is keep that 4.0 so come graduation day you can stand on that little stage in the middle of the football field, while I stand with the majority of my classmates and closest friends on the grass ... I think I will be OK.

Pink uniforms not just for show

As an alumnus of the University, I am embarrassed that Marshall Duncan's column criticizing the women's basketball team for wearing pink was published. There are more important things in life than winning basketball games.

I think any right-thinking person with an IQ over 45 would give out Crocs of any color at any time if it might remind people to give money to support research to cure breast cancer. The column was in poor taste and reflects poorly on the University.

Holiday won't fix student apathy

In response to Maggie Goode's Friday column "Students need day off for voting," not obtaining an absentee ballot in time is a complete lack of effort on the voter's part.

The voting schedule is no secret. It's not rocket science. If you aren't registered to vote in your current town, just mail off for an absentee ballot.

In most places you can even vote up to a week in advance of the election date. A day off for students is not necessitated by low voter turnout. If a student has a vested interest in the future of our country, they will find time to vote.

UGAAlert system worth early calls

I hope all the students who were upset by the "early" wake-up call they got Feb. 8 with the UGAAlert call were regretting their moaning after what happened on Thursday at Northern Illinois University. It has a similar system in place and used it on Thursday to let students know there were shootings and to find a safe place.

I'll take an early wake-up call any day for UGA Alert practice if it could save my life one day.
