I am not racist. Nor am I culturally insensitive or prejudice in any way.

However, it has been brought to my attention that Friday's "Lil Homies" cartoon was perceived by some people in that fashion.

My message was lost.

I am not supporting the notion of doing away with Black History Month. Until the accomplishments of blacks are incorporated seamlessly into American history, a designated time frame to recognize them is necessary.

What I was trying to convey is that according to the mainstream pop culture, the current generation of blacks is not contributing to this historic month.

Positive black people like presidential hopeful Barack Obama are outshined by the choices of others:

Track runner Marion Jones lost her Olympic medals because of steroids. Baseball player Barry Bonds is under public scrutiny as well.

T.I. raps about guns and then was arrested and charged with illegal possession of them (irony?).

Former Atlanta Falcon Michael Vick went from being the highest paid quarterback in the NFL to getting busted for dogfighting.

Al Sharpton defends the Jena 6's hate crime while blatantly opposing the initial hate crime. Do not fight hate with hate, especially physically.

Rap is the most inappropriate music because it disrespects females and idolizes the gangster life. The media always chooses the most stereotypical black to interview.

All of the above leads people to have a negative view of the black culture.

Through my cartoon, I was being sarcastic and making fun of these people.

I am a firm believer that there is only one race: the human race.

Now can you write an editorial apologizing for how bad it sucked?

I've come to the conclusion that the negative effects of our society's obsession about being anti-racist some time ago crossed the line and started to vastly outweigh the negative effects of racism itself. (Continued…)

"Name"...I don't necessarily think that L. Ray is saying that these pop media sources are the only places he gets his opinions from. However, this is where a lot of people under the age of 20 get their information and opinions from. (Continued…)

How long will the Red & Black allow "L. Ray" to embarrass the newspaper (not to mention the university) by producing low-quality scribblings that express cryptic points of view?

One of the most interesting things about Ray's time at the R&B has been the constant barrage of comments that make unfounded assumptions about the cartoonist's race and gender, despite being told daily that the cartoonist is definitely neither white nor male. (Continued…)

I think the one thing here that I must point out is that L.Ray's cartoons are editorials. This means, these are her ideas and her views of how she sees America on a daily basis. (Continued…)
