SIA, HAR MAR SUPERSTAR
Variety Playhouse.Monday march 10, 8 p.m. $15-$17.
Sia Furler, who often lends vocals to U.K. group Zero 7, is actually a native of Australia. The cover of her latest album, "Some People Have Real Problems," features her face covered in war-paint-style marker lines, and the cover is indeed an indication of the contents. The album mixes a wee bit too much silly with serious. However, it is not without merits. Sia's voice is wonderful and captivating even when the songs backing her are not. She will be playing at the Variety Playhouse Monday, March 10.
TILLY AND THE WALL, CAP GUN COUP,
THE KIWIS
Drunken Unicorn. Sunday march 16, 9 p.m. $12.
Formed in 2001, the Omaha, Neb. five-piece has staked a claim on the adorable band market. With handclaps, group vocals and a tap-dancer as its percussionist (no lie), it's an infectious, sunny pop group. Tilly and the Wall will be bringing its music to the Drunken Unicorn Sunday, March 16 in support of its upcoming, untitled album.
BUILT TO SPILL, MEAT PUPPETS
Variety Playhouse.Wednesday march 12,
8 p.m.
$18.50-$21.50.
Many bands formed in the early '90s have since disbanded, lost members or simply fallen into oblivion. Indie-rock band Built to Spill is one of the few groups that has managed to maintain its relevancy in spite of the ticking clock, a feat reserved for only the quite talented - or those with quite a bit of plastic surgery. Doug Martsch's voice is admittedly on the nasal side of things, but it packs a punch. Indeed, the band's music, whether softer or angrier, is compelling, passionate and bursting with talent. The band will be playing along with the Meat Puppets this Wednesday, March 12 at the Variety Playhouse.
