The loss of Courtney Kupets to injury is having an immediate effect on the Georgia gymnastics team.
The Gym Dogs lost all four events to fourth-ranked Michigan Friday night in a 197.6-196.95 defeat in Ann Arbor. Michigan (15-0) recorded their top score of the season while top-ranked Georgia (8-2) dropped their second match of the year.
"Overall I think it was a good meet for us given the emotional situation we've faced in dealing with Courtney Kupets' injury and all of the lineup changes we had to make because of it," Georgia head coach Suzanne Yoculan said. "We had some very uncharacteristic mistakes, especially on floor exercise, but were able to regroup and come back strong on beam."
Georgia opened on bars with a 49.350 led by Tiffany Tolnay's 9.900. Katie Heenan and Grace Taylor each added 9.875s. After Michigan posted a 49.475 on vault, Georgia trailed by .125 heading to the second rotation.
Paige Burns led off the vault rotation tying a season-best 9.750. Then in her first time competing vault in her collegiate career, freshman Hilary Mauro hit a 9.800. After a fall from Lauren Sessler in the third spot, Cassidy McComb came back to score a 9.900. Marcia Newby added a 9.825, and then Heenan stuck her vault in the anchor spot and scored a 9.900.
As a team the Gym Dogs notched a 49.175 on vault. Along with a 49.325 from Michigan on bars, the Wolverines led, 98.800-98.525, at the halfway point.
Georgia had some struggles on floor that included two gymnasts stepping out of bounds. The team tally was a 49.100. Michigan put together 49.350 beam with three scores of 9.900 or better and led 148.150-147.625 after three rotations.
Despite a 49.325 on beam, Georgia could not overcome the deficit and dropped its second meet of the year.
The Gym Dogs return home next weekend for a Saturday meet against UCLA at 7:30 p.m.
