After an 11-2 season and a Sugar Bowl trouncing of Hawai'i, Georgia football coach Mark Richt is getting a raise.

Richt's contract, which has six years remaining, stays the same, but his base salary will increase from its current total at around $2 million to $2.8 million per year.

"In looking at everything across the board in regard to Mark Richt and the program's level of success, the commitment he made to the University of Georgia, I felt that this salary was commensurate with where he should be within the marketplace," Georgia Athletic Director Damon Evans said in a teleconference.

"It's a blessing for me and my family to be at UGA," Richt said in a news release. "We've been treated extraordinarily well and look forward to being at Georgia for many years to come. I'm very appreciative of the confidence in our program on the part of the administration and the Athletic Board."

The salary, Evans estimated, will put Richt "somewhere around the fifth position within the conference."

"I don't want us always to be held to what some of the other institutions are doing," Evans said. "I'm not going to say that doesn't impact what we do to a certain extent, but it's like people say, you're not going to jump off the roof if somebody else jumps off the roof."

Richt has been in Athens since 2001, with his current contract running until 2013.

As far as base salaries go, it appears Nick Saban (Alabama), Urban Meyer (Florida), and Bobby Petrino (Arkansas) all are set to make more than Richt this season.

His $2.8 million base salary ties him with LSU's Les Miles and Auburn's Tommy Tuberville.

"Those other institutions have to do what they have to do," Evans said.

Earns? Are the rest of us uga faculty and staff going to get an equivalent "across the board" raise?" Someone commenting on another r&b article recently said janitors don't "deserve" $10 or $12 dollars an hour. (Continued…)

According to the Athens Banner-Herald, his previous salary was $2 million and the raise was $800,000. So which one of you did some poor research?

This is a perfect example of why the professional atheletics program must be removed from any association with the so-called "University of Georgia". It is a business, plain and simple. (Continued…)

Try shadowing Mark Richt for a day and see the work he does. No disrespect to the janitors and Bolton grill operators on this campus, but I would argue that their work pales in comparison to the load that Richt carries on a day to day basis. (Continued…)

To everyone who does not think Richt deserves the raise... 2 years ago UGA's athletic department was the most profitable athletic department in the country, bringing in over 39 million!!! That is in one year, how much did any single other single department bring in??? Also, we all know that the largest contributor to the athletic department is the football program. (Continued…)

Coach Richt DESERVES this salary increase !!! He assisted the DAWGS in their "comeback glory" --I still get goosebumps as I reflect on the GA vs FLA game !!! How amazing was that !!! Plus, this wave of determination continued throughout the rest of the "football season !!!" I have heard accolades concerning Coach Richt from some of UGA's most formidable rivals !!! Among the positive traits of this individual is his sincere concern for each player -- both on and off the playing field !!! How refreshing it is to see Coach Richt and his pretty "water girl" spouse, Katharynn (sp?) smooching as everyone applauds !!! His heartfelt message to Michael/family/friends concerning this young man's Mother (who died) as the UGA family congregated to pay their respects was very moving. (Continued…)
