E-mail contains 'scholarship scam'
Univ. warns added payment unneeded
Issue date: 4/3/08 Section: News
The University sent an e-mail to students Wednesday telling them they should not pay anyone to complete or process a financial aid application.
The e-mail said students told the Office of Student Financial Aid that the students have "received unsolicited letters which list a Student Profile Number, the University of Georgia and a Filing Status of 'Pending.'"
According to the e-mail, there is an official-looking seal on the letter and envelope the students received, and the instructions tell students to complete the Student Aid Profile Form and pay $48.
The notification e-mail was sent to the Arch News Students list serv, and encourages students to visit http://www.ftc.gov/scholarshipscams to learn about the Federal Trade Commissions' study of scholarship scams.
