Georgia football play-by-play announcer Larry Munson underwent a successful surgery on Friday to remove blood clots in his brain and was resting by Saturday afternoon.

A CT scan performed at St. Mary's Hospital on Thursday revealed Munson, 85, was suffering from a subdural hematoma, a condition in which blood collects on the surface of the brain.

The average recovery time from such surgery varies and can last for up to six months, and Munson is expected to recover fully.

"I was really pleased to hear that Larry's surgery went well on Friday," Athletic Director Damon Evans said in a news release. "All of us in the Bulldog Nation wish him a full and speedy recovery."

Munson missed Saturday's G-Day game but is expected to broadcast his 43rd season of Georgia football, which kicks off Aug. 30 against Georgia Southern.

Last season, Munson broadcast only the Bulldogs' home games, which will be the case again in the fall. He originally was expected to call Saturday's G-Day practice before backing out early last week.

At the Bulldogs' final home game against Kentucky last season, Munson, whose voice has become synonymous with Georgia football, was made an honorary letterman by the University's Athletic Association.

He is also a member of the College Hall of Fame and Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, and he recently received the 2008 Furman Bisher Award for Sports Media Excellence.

The Athletic Association has asked anyone wishing to send cards or letters to Munson to mail them to the following address: Larry Munson, c/o UGA Athletic Association, P.O. Box 1472, Athens, GA 30603.
