A University faculty member who calls himself "one of the lucky ones" due to his 25-year stay in Athens is leaving the school to build an honors program at another Georgia university.

Steven Elliott-Gower, the associate director of the honors program, said Thursday in a telephone interview that he is going to Georgia College and State University to serve as the director of honors and an associate professor.

He said he plans to "build a really distinctive honors program," and place an emphasis on international affairs.

"I will work on making the concept of global citizenship a focal point," he said.

Elliott-Gower said he has enjoyed his time on campus. He said his favorite thing to do at the University is walk through North Campus toward downtown and run into some of the many people he has come to know.

"I love the sense of community even in a campus this large," he said.

Elliott-Gower, who came to the University from England, said one of the first courses he taught was American government. He later moved to teach an introduction course about global issues.
