Pie, root beer and candles set the mood for this month's Relay for Life.

University Relay for Life teams raised money for the American Cancer Society with a mini-relay and promoted the main event.

"This is a small version of what is going to happen on the 25th," said Rodica Toderic, a senior from Duluth.

The teams hosted activities such as "Pie in the face," "Human fountain," "How many reps can you do?" and "Root beer pong."

Many of the activities held during the mini-relay were ideas from past Relay for Life events.

With a donation of $1, students could throw a pie at Gayle Smotherman, a sophomore from Watkinsville.

About 100 teams are participating in this year's event. Their goal is to raise $300,000. Teams donated about $290,000 last year.

The Relay for Life event will be held April 25 at Specs Town Track from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Registered teams will walk all night and camp outside.

Students can buy luminaries to remember loved ones who died from cancer. The candles will be lighted and placed to spell "hope" on the track.

"Cancer doesn't sleep, so we won't for one night," Toderic said.

Many of the group's executive board members have been affected by cancer, said Rebecca Negrin, a senior from Marietta.

"My mother is a breast cancer survivor. She will be there as a survivor to walk the survivor lap and help support the fight against breast cancer," Negrin said.

Games, food, live music and performances by University groups will occur throughout the day.

Those who are not part of a Relay for Life team can support the event by donating $8 to enter.

"It's a big celebration and party," Negrin said. "Even if you are not a participant on a team, we want you to come."
