Georgia men golfers top seed in NCAA East Regional
Issue date: 5/6/08 Section: Sports
The Georgia men's golf team will start its hunt for a NCAA title as a No. 1 seed.
The Bulldogs were tabbed the No. 1 seed for the NCAA East Regional, which starts next week. Georgia joins 26 other teams from May 15-17 at the Council Fire Golf Club in Chattanooga, Tenn. The top 10 teams from each of the three NCAA Regionals will make up the field for the NCAA Championship May 28-31 at Purdue's Kampen Course.
"We're honored to be a No. 1 seed and we're definitely looking forward to playing in Chattanooga," Georgia coach Chris Haack said. "We've got some good teams in our regional, so we've certainly got our work cut out for us. This is always the most nerve-wracking tournament the year because of what's at stake. But with that being said, I am confident our guys will be focused on what they need to do."
Joining the Bulldogs in the East Regional are Charlotte, South Carolina, Duke, Chattanooga, Auburn, East Tennessee State, Michigan State, Mississippi, Alabama-Birmingham, Virginia Tech, North Carolina State, Mississippi State, Georgia State, North Florida, UC-Irvine, Augusta State, SMU, Middle Tennessee, Coastal Carolina, Memphis, Virginia, Western Carolina, Colorado State, New Mexico State, Western Illinois and Jackson State. Twelve of the 27 teams in the East Regional won conference tournaments this season.
Georgia is making its 19th appearance since the NCAA went to the regional format for the 1989 season. This is the 18th time Georgia has been picked for the East Regional. In 2003, the Bulldogs played in the West Regional.
