Georgia fired a 9-over 297 in the opening round of the NCAA Championships on Tuesday, leaving the No. 7-ranked Bulldogs tied for 11th and 13 shots off the lead.

Senior Garrett Phillips carded a 1-under 71 on the University of New Mexico's Championship Course to lead Georgia, with the Bulldogs also counting pair of 75s from Mallory Hetzel and Innapha Tantanavivat as well as a 76 from Krystle Caithiness. Carolina Andrade shot 77.

"Garrett played pretty strongly and everyone else fought hard," head coach Kelley Hester said. "We made up a little ground with some birdies coming in, but overall we didn't take advantage of the holes you have the chance to make birdies on."

Phillips bogeyed No. 12 but immediately gained that stroke back with a birdie at No. 13. After six straight pars to turn at even, Phillips birdied No. 1 and then posted pars on the final eight holes.

Southern Cal grabbed the first-round lead after posting a 4-under 284. The Women of Troy lead Auburn and UCLA by five strokes. Arizona State is tied for third at 290, with just five strokes then separating the teams in fifth-17th places.

"We kept ourselves in contention and hopefully we can move up the leaderboard over the next couple of days," Hester said. "It would've been nice to fire it up and go super low, but if you're not going to do that, you certainly want to stay within striking distance. We didn't hurt ourselves too bad, but we'll look to play better tomorrow."

Nannette Hill of Wake Forest is atop the individual leaderboard equaling the course record with a 5-under 67. UCLA's Sydney Michaels, Southern Cal's Belen Mozo, New Mexico's Alexandra Phelps, Arizona State's Azahara Munoz and Auburn's Candace Schepperle all are tied for second at 3-under.
