Helgeson advances in NCAA singles
Issue date: 5/21/08 Section: Sports
Georgia senior Travis Helgeson advanced through first round play in the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championships Wednesday in Tulsa, Okla.
No. 4-seeded Helgeson, who clinched Georgia's 4-2 NCAA Championship-winning match against Texas, was the only Bulldog to advance through Wednesday's first-round action. He took down Moritz Baumann of Wisconsin, 6-4, 6-3, to earn a place in the second round, where he will meet Kaden Hensel of Tennessee. Helgeson will be looking to avenge a three-set loss to Hensel in Knoxville earlier this season, in Georgia's only loss of its 10-1 SEC-championship winning campaign. The time of Helgeson's second-round match has yet to be announced.
Sophomore Jamie Hunt, ranked No. 38, made a run at knocking off Illinois' No. 21-ranked Ryan Rowe in the first round, winning the first set, 6-4. The Illini senior then battled back in the second set to win 6-2, forcing a third set. Looking to pull off the upset in the third set, Hunt came up just one service break short as Rowe ousted him from singles play by a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 score.
Sophomore Nate Schnugg dropped his round of 64 match in the singles tournament Wednesday as well. After dropping a 6-3 first set to Ruben Gonzales of Illinois, Schnugg battled back to force a second-set tiebreaker. Gonzales out-dueled the 17th-ranked Bulldog in the breaker, as Schnugg fell by a final score of 6-3, 7-6(3).
Senior Luis Flores fell short in his first-round singles match. Flores was knocked out of the competition by No. 3-seeded Oleksandr Nedovyesov of Oklahoma State, 6-2, 6-2.
The singles round of 32 will be played Thursday, followed by the beginning of the doubles tournament. 17th-ranked Hunt and Schnugg are Georgia's only doubles entry and will face Clancy Shields and Luke Shields of Boise State. Their match will begin following the conclusion of the Thursday's singles matches.
