In what should be a time of relaxation and recuperation, it is an unfortunate truth that many University students have to keep on working or taking classes in the summer (and often both). As the Beach Boys noted, "there ain't no cure for the summertime blues."

Indeed, even though summer is in full swing most everywhere else in the northern hemisphere, we here at The Red & Black continue to work to bring you a weekly dose of opinion and enlightenment about the University and the world today.

Part of what this means is that the opinions page continues its role as a forum for community discussion and debate. We are as hungry for columns and letters from you as ever. We want to know what you have to say. Don't you want to make your voice heard?

Now is an especially exciting time to begin submitting columns as the national political scene goes into all-out general election mode.

Or, you may see fit to comment on trends in movies or the media.

My first column in The Red & Black, for example, was a summer piece about Al Gore's movie, An Inconvenient Truth.

Summer is as good a time as any to get started at The Red & Black, and you can write about an exceedingly wide range of topics. If you have a well-formed thought and can write about it in 450-600 words, you may qualify to get published in The Red & Black.

You can send your columns and letters to opinions@randb.com, where I'll personally read and digest them all.

As all of us bound here in Athens know, summer break can be anything but a break. If you want to "raise a fuss, and [you wanna] raise a holler/ 'cause you've been workin' all summer just to try and earn a dollar," know that we at The Red & Black understand your pain and can help you express it.

Relaxation and recuperation? Are you kidding me ? When I went to Georgia (as a Vietnam veteran) I went every quarter for three years while working! Many times I would work a midnight shift and then come to classes. (Continued…)

James, I can relate. I hate these damn college kids with their care-free lives. No one works hard anymore--they all just drink and protest the war (which is so awesome I can't believe no one wants to do ROTC like we know they should). (Continued…)
