Ticket turmoil

Students faced unnecessary confusion while requesting season football tickets

"No tickets are available at this time."

This ominous message greeted countless University students Wednesday at georgiadogs.com. Thanks to confusion caused by georgiadogs.com/student-tickets - the Web site students were instructed to bookmark - and a mass e-mail sent Tuesday night, ticket registration created a commotion on campus.

The process of procuring student football tickets tends to cause, at the very least, a headache, and this year's registration was no exception.

It was unclear to many students that Tuesday night's e-mail contained the only link to register for tickets.

Students who visited georgiadogs.com/student-tickets found themselves caught in a never-ending circle of Web sites, and were growing more concerned by the hour.

The Athletic Association undoubtedly believed a simple link from one e-mail would be the most efficient route for registration, so why were we instructed to bookmark a different site from the beginning? These changing procedures should have been outlined more clearly on georgiadogs.com - for everyone's sake.

In years past, it was the ticket pick-up process that created mass chaos, as students skipped class and camped outside Stegeman Coliseum to secure priority seats. The Red & Black editorial board can only hope that this year's ticket-induced frustration is finished.

Everyone - we think - finally figured out how to register. Now, let's hope the new ticket distribution method goes more smoothly.

Save your pennies

As the University works on budget cuts, here are tips for saving your dough

The University is not planning to loosen its purse strings anytime soon. As reported on the front page of today's Red & Black, the University is working toward a 6 percent reduction plan, and has been asked to prepare an 8 percent reduction plan for fiscal year 2010.

Times are tough. In light of recent University budget cuts, The Red & Black editorial board suggests these frugal-friendly tips to keep your own student budget afloat:

• Use coupons. The thrill of the buy-one-get-one-free deal cannot be described in words.

• Order the $2 coffee instead of a $4 sugar-filled mocha. You'll get more caffeine out of the deal, and save in the long run. Better yet, make coffee at home.

• Take the bus. Though not the most glamorous option, the University and Athens transit buses are free to students and ease the pain of filling up your tank.

• Make your own food. Organize a night with your friends to cook up a fabulous meal instead of going out to eat. Then you can eat leftovers for lunch.

• Check out the University library. If you're spending full-price on books at Borders or Barnes & Noble, you're basically throwing your hard-earned money out the window.

• Dim the lights. Do you really need seven lights on in one apartment? Cut back on electricity a bit and you'll be rewarded come bill time.

Happy savings!
