Pay more, get less with University Parking Services

Ever heard the saying pay more and get more? Well, the University Parking Services certainly does not live the mantra.

I have been riding a Moped or scooter to campus the past two years, and I have never been so annoyed at parking in my life until this semester.

The whole reason I changed my mode of transportation was to eliminate the hassle of car parking, but now I am not even afforded that small luxury.

I went the other week to register for this year's parking permit for my bike, and I was astounded to learn the price had gone up since last year. Not 20 percent, not 30 percent, but DOUBLE the cost - $120!

Well, after the initial sticker shock wore off, I asked as to why this price would have increased two-fold.

You would think that was a means to gain more revenue in effort to have more places to park, but that does not seem to be the case.

Why are we paying out the nose for tuition, lab fees and books, and now they want to ice the cake and gouge me on my "environmentally friendly" transportation? Makes me want to drive an obscenely large diesel truck instead.

R&B finally prints truthful reviews

Courtney Smith is probably the best music/movie reviewer The Red & Black has ever employed. Thank you for your willingness to call a spade a spade. Yes, "The House Bunny" sucks like a New Orleans hooker, and yes, Shwayze's lyrics are less intelligent than mayonnaise.

I can't count how many times Red & Black reviewers in the past would give any garbage album or film a decent review, eventually causing me to ignore them altogether. Now it seems I can actually trust a recommendation because Ms. Smith is willing to call a piece of crap a piece of crap.

The snarky comments are also a welcome addition to the reviews, which in years past have been sorely lacking in creativity.

Ticket allocation punishes fans

After looking forward to being a Georgia Bulldog since attending my first football game at Sanford Stadium as a 5 year old, I was ecstatic to get lower level tickets my freshman year and figured I would get the same my sophomore year. Not true.

My roommate and I waited for five hours (since noon) Wednesday to pick up our tickets and get decent seats from the lower level tickets remaining.

After a man working the ticket booth informed us all the ticket windows at our booth had lower level tickets on top of the pile, I figured being the first in line would guarantee me a lower level ticket.

After my roommate and I received our tickets, we looked down to see section 315 listed on the tickets while the ticket window next to us handed out tickets to section 140. My roommate explained to the man at the window, who was coincidentally the same guy who told us there were lower level tickets on top of each pile at each window, that we had been there since noon, and he answered with, "that's the way they told us to do it."

After a moment of shock, I could not believe that I got worse tickets than my freshman year, and I waited for five hours to receive worse tickets than people who walked up an hour beforehand and were sent to the "better" ticket window.

My biggest issue is that as a die hard Georgia football fan who waited five hours for decent tickets to cheer on her team, I was punished with upper level tickets while less dedicated individuals got rewarded for walking up to the Coliseum an hour beforehand.

I understand that as a sophomore I am not going to receive the best tickets in the stadium, but I do expect to be given a fair chance at getting a decent ticket instead of being subjected to a "luck of the draw" method.
