Richt says games on Thursdays not likely, but 'wouldn't hurt'

Head coach Mark Richt noted that Central Michigan and South Carolina both have added advantages since they both play Thursday night games the week before playing Georgia.

"It's more time to prepare than we have to prepare for them," Richt said. "I don't like it. I think it's good for them. I'm not mad at them, I think they're smart. I think there's an advantage to that, no doubt." Though Richt wouldn't mind seeing Georgia play on Thursdays, he didn't seem confident that it will happen anytime soon.

"I'm not going to make a comment about that," he said. "Georgia is not going to play Thursday. We'll leave it at that."

Having a Thursday game has given Central Michigan, which Georgia plays Saturday, and South Carolina, which is Georgia's opponent next Saturday, two extra days to prepare for the Bulldogs. Richt said that while a Thursday night home game is highly unlikely, he would not be opposed to a Thursday night away game opener.

"There's no way you can do a home game," Richt said. "But it wouldn't hurt my feelings if we opened the season with an Oklahoma State game at their place on a Thursday. It wouldn't hurt my feelings, but it's not going to happen. You can write it and get me in trouble, go ahead."

Southerland may return vs. 'Bama

Richt added that fullback Brannan Southerland might see his first game action against Alabama, but only as a personal protector on the punt team - a position Benjamin Boyd is playing right now.

"(Southerland will play against) Tennessee as a full time football fullback," Richt said. "We think that there's a chance that if, say, we punted four to eight times or however many times a team punts, we think that might be a good way to start playing him and not overdo it. But that's still up in the air." Southerland has been recovering from a fracture in his foot that required surgery.

Richt added safety Quintin Banks, who hurt his knee during fall camp, has a good chance at coming back for the Alabama game.

Soccer team to face two top 10s

After splitting the first road trip of the season last weekend, the soccer team returns home to battle a pair of top 10 teams. The Dogs face No. 6 Virginia tonight at 7 and No. 7 Stanford on Sunday.

"I think individually and collectively these are going to be two of the better teams we are going to play all year," forward Ashley Baker said. "[But] our players have embraced the schedule. They're excited about the opportunity."

While facing elite opponents help, getting blown out certainly does not.

"First and foremost, we need to get results," Baker said. "It's one thing to play those types of teams, but you've got to get some results. That's a win, that's a tie. I think our program is beyond 'let's play the good teams close.' I think we went over that hurdle last year."

Call me old fashioned if you want, but there is just something positive to be said about retaining SOME traditions, especially the Saturday @ Sanford Stadium tradition. (Continued…)

I, the "dinosaur," am compelled to say that our DAWGS should continue to play football on Saturdays !!! This is of utmost importance, to retain this magical tradition !! It is vital -- those of us who must tolerate the 40+ hours, Monday- Friday in our respective job sites, are rewarded as we anticipate Saturday's UGA tailgate party/festivities !!!!! These Saturday events ROCK OUR WORLD !!!
