Alma mater, you're not our mother
To seek student input, administrators are postponing making a decision on a policy that would require students to tell the University if they are arrested outside of Athens. We are glad administrators are asking students what they think, and we're happy to contribute our views. We think the policy is a terrible idea. Administrators are not our parents - they don't need to know if we're arrested for drinking too much eggnog at the local bar during Winter Break.
Mo' privacy, mo' problems
Restricting your personal information through OASIS stops everyone from finding you through UGASearch - which can prevent the University from acknowledging your enrollment to future employers. We understand why some students wouldn't want their addresses and phone numbers publicly accessible, but the current system is inconvenient at best. Why not make the directory open only to MyUGA-affiliated parties, and only list names and e-mail addresses?
When an A isn't enough
The University Curriculum Committee is reevaluating the plus/minus system, potentially adding an A+ and taking away the C-. Those who work hard for their 99 and 100 percents deserve extra GPA points, and really, shouldn't a 70 not qualify as failing in some major classes? We support rewarding hardworking students with higher GPAs. Just say no to arbitrary cutoff points.
The budget ate my library homework
The University is putting off making a decision on the cancellation of journal subscriptions. This will allow faculty and students to have a say as to which journals should be canceled and which should be kept. This extra time will help the library to make informed decisions that will benefit researchers.
Reading,'rithmetic,'riting - oh my!
If a new proposal passes, the University will start including incoming students' writing scores in their overall SAT score. Though subjective, the writing portion can be a clear indicator of how well students will do in writing-intensive courses at the University.
100,000 of your closest friends
The Athletic Association Board of Directors met this week to discuss, among other things, expanding Sanford Stadium. We've heard gripes about spending money on an expansion in light of recent budget cuts, but the Athletic Association operates independently from the University when it comes to money. We're fans of the possible expansion, but bring on some extra student seats!
