Prominent UGA housing and consumer economics professor dies at age 68

University of Georgia professor Doug Batchel died Thursday morning.

According to The Athens Banner-Herald, Bachtel’s had limited mobility due to his multiple sclerosis.

Batchel, 68, was a professor of housing and consumer economics who recently retired on June 30.

The Ohio State University Ph.D. graduate was known for his research in demographics, statistics, substance use and program evaluation.

He was also the editor of The Georgia County Guide, The Georgia Municipal Guide and The Georgia Housing Guide which are comprised of statistics about 159 of the Georgia counties and 534 municipalities.

Bachtel's funeral services will be held on Aug. 17 at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Lord and Stephens West on Jimmy located on Daniel Road.
