The Red & Black took home 14 regional awards, including six first-place finishes, at the 2013 Region 3 Mark of Excellence awards Saturday in Atlanta.

The awards were announced at the Society of Professional Journalists' MediaAtlanta conference, honoring outstanding collegiate journalism done in the previous year.

The Red & Black was named best affiliated website and best all-around non-daily newspaper in the region, which includes newspapers from Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama.

Four Red & Black students were first-place winners, including opinions editor Blake Seitz (general column writing), Phillip Henry (editorial cartooning), Kristy Densmore (breaking news photography) and Randy Schafer (photo illustration).

All first-place finishers will continue to the national stage, where they will compete against the winners from the other 11 SPJ regions.

The Red & Black staff also earned six second-place honors and two third-place finishes.
