A prisoner from the Athens-Clarke County Jail died Tuesday evening, a Clarke County Sheriff’s Office press release said.
Derek Meyer, 28, was found unresponsive in his cell at the ACC jail shortly after noon on July 29. According to the statement, jail security and medical staff performed treatment until EMS arrived. Meyer was transported to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center and placed on life support. He died on the evening of July 31.
Meyer lived in a single-man cell, according to the press release. He had been in jail since May 11, and was arrested for sexual assault charges, including child molestation and aggravated sexual battery.
His death is under investigation by the CCSO and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. No further details are available at this time.
