Kicking off a new year of music at the Flicker Theatre & Bar comes a set performed by Mermaid Motor Lounge, followed by Truckstop Waterfall, an acoustically-driven duo. Headlining will be Tyler Childers, a Kentucky-based folk singer. Music starts at 10 p.m.
Butch Trucks and the Freight Train Band
The Foundry will be hosting one headline performance thursday night, with Butch Trucks and the Freight Train Band. This colorfully-named group is hardly a year old but has already wrapped up four US tours due to rave reviews for its bluesey drums and guitars. Tickets are $18-22, music starts at 8 p.m.
Friday, Jan. 6
Murder the Mood
Fresh Athenian three-piece We By the Sea will start the Caledonia Lounge off with indie rock friday night. Following this will be set spanning funk, punk, rock and more by The Good Looks. The night concludes with a performance by local alt rock band Murder the Mood. Show starts at 9 p.m. and tickets are $5-7.
Starting off at the Go Bar friday night will be DJ Mahogany, the fan favorite local DJ who specializes in R&B. Next, the experimental rock band Stupid Idiots will play a set. Finishing the night is local musician Eli Rickli with the stage name of Midnight Boi. Rickli will perform self-described “pseudo-Satanic hip hop.” Music starts at 10 p.m.
Shauna and the Jaywalkers
Two groups will play at Hendershot’s Coffee Bar starting at 8 p.m. First, listeners will enjoy the bluesy guitar and soulful vocals comprising the trio known as Blind Orphan Kitty. They will be accompanied by a performance from Athens artist Shauna Greeson in her original group Shauna and the Jaywalkers. Tickets are $5.
Saturday, Jan. 7
Holman Autry Band
The Georgia Theatre will feature a night of country music on Saturday, beginning with local group Eastville Belle. Following, will be a performance and album release show featuring singer-songwriter Erica Sunshine Lee. Concluding the night is the southern rock group the Holman Autry Band. Music starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $12 in advance, or $15 at the door.
Four sets will perform at the Caledonia Lounge this weekend, starting with local prog-rock and metal band Nineveh’s Garden. Next, a local rock pair called Volt will play a set. Nightmare Coast will bring Athens-inspired hard rock, and the night concludes with punk provided by local band Heirs. Tickets are $5-7. Music begins at 9 p.m.
Caleb Keith & the Calaveras
Blackwater Deep, a local band supplying indie-folk sounds and meandering music inspired by the South, will play at Flicker Theatre & Bar. Following this will be a performance by Caleb Keith & the Calaveras, a self-proclaimed “dusty-boot Americana” group sure to play songs from their recent album “Between Late and Lonesome.” Music starts at 9 p.m.
