Athens residents protested through downtown on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2018, following President Donald Trump's dismissal of Jeff Sessions on Nov. 7 as well as the 2018 midterm election results in Georgia. A group protestors gathered at the Arch and made their way to Athens-Clarke County City Hall, and another group followed shortly after.

Matthew Whitaker will take over as acting attorney general, according to President Trump. Brian Kemp has claimed victory as governor in Georgia, but Stacey Abrams refuses to conceded, claiming there are thousands of absentee  and provisional ballots still to be counted.
